Scary Movie 6 Reverses Course for the Franchise With Official Rating

The latest rating for this summer’s movie is in, and it confirms the series is returning to its original style after becoming a bit more lighthearted in recent films.

The latest installment in the Scary Movie franchise, officially titled Scary Movie, has received an R-rating. This is because the film contains strong sexual content, nudity, violence, drug use, and language. Only the first two Scary Movie films, released in 2000 and 2001, were previously rated R. The sequels released in 2003, 2006, and 2013 all received a PG-13 rating.

Scary Movie’s New Installment Brings Back the R Rating

The latest installment in the series is a return to its roots, not just with a more mature tone, but also by bringing back a familiar face who hadn’t appeared since Scary Movie 2. The movie reunites the Wayans brothers, who co-wrote the script alongside Rick Alvarez, bringing their signature adult comedy back to the franchise. Michael Tiddes, a frequent collaborator with Marlon Wayans, directed the film.

The movie will also feature several members of the Wayans family, with Marlon Wayans returning as Shorty Meeks and Shawn Wayans reprising his role as Ray Wilkins. Damon Wayans Jr., Gregg Wayans, and Kim Wayans will also be appearing. Fans will be happy to see familiar faces from previous films, including Anna Faris as Cindy Campbell, Regina Hall as Brenda Meeks, Jon Abrahams as Bobby Prinze, Dave Sheridan as Doofy Gilmore, Lochlyn Munro as Greg Phillippe, Cheri Oteri as Gail Hailstorm, and Chris Elliott as Hanson.

Familiar Faces Return in 2026’s Scary Movie

The next Scary Movie will bring the original group of friends back together when a new masked killer – similar to Ghostface from Scream – starts terrorizing them. The film promises to parody recent horror hits like Longlegs, Heart Eyes, M3GAN, Terrifier, Smile, The Substance, Weapons, and the Blumhouse Halloween movies. The spoofing won’t be limited to horror, though – Kenan Thompson will appear as Michael Jackson, referencing the recent biopic about his life.

Okay, so I’m SO excited! It’s been 26 years since we thought we escaped Ghostface, but he’s back, and this time, it feels personal. The original crew – Shorty, Ray, Cindy, and Brenda – are all teaming up again in a new Scary Movie. They’re not just fighting a killer, though; they’re taking on all the horror movie clichés! Seriously, every single reboot, remake, sequel, and even those ‘legacy’ stories are fair game. Nothing is off-limits, and no horror trope is safe. And the best part? The Wayans are back, and they’re ready to call out all the ridiculousness of ‘cancel culture’ with their signature humor!

Scary Movie will be on June 5, 2026.
