Dark Horse Comics to close all Things From Another World storefronts

After almost 50 years in business, Dark Horse Comics is closing the doors of its Things From Another World stores.

Dark Horse Comics, the publisher behind popular series like “Hellboy” and “The Umbrella Academy,” had two stores in Oregon and a main store at Universal Citywalk in Los Angeles. The Oregon locations will close in June, and the Los Angeles store will close in September. The company stated these closures are part of a plan to update its business.

Dark Horse acknowledged the decision was difficult and expressed concern for those who will be directly impacted, stating they didn’t make it lightly.

‘This is a complete decimation.’ Why family businesses that built Hollywood are closing

Many family-owned businesses that support the Hollywood film industry have recently been forced to close due to a significant drop in local filming.

Dark Horse Comics, a major publisher based in Oregon, is shifting its focus away from traditional retail. The company now plans to prioritize supporting its writers and artists, giving them the tools and partnerships they need to develop their ideas for film and television. Dark Horse has grown to become one of the largest comic book publishers in the United States.

The company recently started a new gaming division to help developers create interactive games.

Dark Horse explained that these changes will allow them to concentrate on what they do best: publishing and creating collectibles, while also strengthening their connections with fans and retailers.

I was really surprised to hear last year that Electronic Arts, one of the biggest names in gaming, was going to be bought out by a group of investors for $55 billion. A lot of us gamers are worried about it, though. We’re concerned that this deal, and others like it, will lead to even more power being concentrated in the hands of a few companies, and that won’t be good for the future of gaming. The Players Alliance is speaking out about these fears, and I support them.

These changes happened just a week after Dark Horse Comics’ parent company, Dark Horse Media, became part of a new organization called Fellowship Entertainment. Fellowship Entertainment was created following a split within Embracer Group. Now, Fellowship Entertainment includes companies like Dark Horse Media and Crystal Dynamics, and owns the rights to popular franchises such as “The Lord of the Rings” and “Tomb Raider.”

Mike Richardson started Dark Horse Comics in 1986, building on his earlier bookstore, Pegasus Books, which he opened in Bend, Oregon, in 1980. Richardson originally hoped to become a writer, but as Pegasus Books grew, he shifted his focus to publishing. Dark Horse quickly gained recognition in its early years by creating comic series based on popular films like “Star Wars,” “Aliens,” and “Predator.” Now, the company manages the rights to over 350 different brands across a wide range of media, including comics, books, movies, TV shows, video games, and collectibles.

The recent closure of Things From Another World at Universal Citywalk means another long-standing comic book store has disappeared from the city. This follows a trend of beloved shops like Geoffrey’s Comics, Earth-2 Comics, and Hi De-Ho Comics all being forced to shut down, largely because of difficulties in the retail industry.
