Be warned, this contains spoilers for Season 1, Episode 3 of Dutton Ranch, “Act of God Business.” Carter (Finn Little) is longing for Yellowstone, but the Duttons understand he can’t return. The first three episodes of Dutton Ranch follow Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) as they start a new life in Rio Paloma, Texas. Carter has joined them in running their new black angus cattle ranch, which Beth and Rip named in memory of the late John Dutton (Kevin Costner).
At first glance, Dutton Ranch seems a lot like Yellowstone. Like the character Rip on Yellowstone, the ranch here is managed with the help of two cowboys, Azul Ramos (J.R. Villarreal) and Zachariah Moss (Marc Menchaca), who shares a similar history to Walker (Ryan Bingham) from Yellowstone. However, the flat landscapes and presence of snakes in South Texas don’t offer the same breathtaking views as Montana.
Life on the Dutton Ranch is tough for 19-year-old Carter, who has to go to high school with much younger students just to get an education. He finds a bit of happiness when he meets Oreana Lynn Jackson (Natalie Alyn Lind), the spirited and independent granddaughter of Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening), who owns the competing 10-Petals Ranch.
Dutton Ranch Reminds Us Of The Saddest Yellowstone Reality
In the third episode of Dutton Ranch, Carter introduces Oreana to his home. Oreana notices a framed photo of the barn from the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch in Carter’s room. She quickly realizes the photo is important to him and asks him about it.
Oreana: “You wanna go back?”
Carter: “I do. But I can’t.”
The end of Dutton Ranch highlights a painful reality: the original Yellowstone as we knew it no longer exists. In the series finale of Yellowstone, Kayce Dutton sold the ranch land back to the Broken Rock Reservation. Led by Chairman Thomas Rainwater, the Dutton Ranch was dismantled, effectively ending the Dutton family’s 140-year history on the land.
When Beth first encountered Carter in season 4 of Yellowstone, he was a troubled teenager – an orphan who had dropped out of high school. With nowhere else to turn, he started working as a ranch hand, where Rip taught him the ropes of being a cowboy through tough training. Despite the harsh environment, John Dutton showed Carter kindness and became a much-needed father figure.
As a big fan of Yellowstone, I always felt like Carter’s reaction to John Dutton’s death wasn’t fully explored in season five. Now, Dutton Ranch is finally starting to delve into that, and it’s really interesting. It’s becoming clear that Carter feels incredibly connected to Beth and Rip – almost like he’s indebted to them. While he appreciates everything they do for him, it also seems like he doesn’t have much control over his own future, which is a bit heartbreaking to watch.
Carter wishes he could return to Yellowstone, but that’s not going to happen. His feelings reflect what many viewers experience: a sense of nostalgia and sadness that five seasons and two prequel stories about the Dutton family’s struggles are coming to an end. The show has allowed audiences to connect with and live through the Duttons’ fight to protect their land.
Kayce Did The Right Thing About East Camp In Marshals
The first season of Marshals ended with Kayce Dutton deciding what to do with East Camp, a final piece of the Dutton family’s Yellowstone Ranch. His father had given Kayce this land, and it was specifically excluded from the sale to the Broken Rock Reservation.
Kayce was offered a lot of money for East Camp by Thomas Weaver, but he decided to hold onto it. He felt it was the right decision, explaining that he’d already lost so much, including his father and wife, Monica. East Camp represents the last piece of Yellowstone land still owned by the Dutton family.
Tate Dutton, Kayce’s son, was originally expected to take over the Yellowstone Ranch. However, Kayce can now only offer Tate East Camp, the site where his mother, Monica, is buried. If Beth, Rip, and Carter ever come back to Montana – as many fans hope will happen in a potential crossover with the Marshals series and the Dutton Ranch storyline – East Camp is the one place that would still feel familiar to them.
The Dutton family’s story will forever be linked to Yellowstone. Creator Taylor Sheridan might also develop more prequel series, similar to 1944, which would follow the adventures of Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar). Although fans can rewatch Yellowstone whenever they like, the character of Carter, on the Dutton Ranch, can’t return to the life he once knew.
