I’ve been a fan of this franchise for years, and what really draws me in is its incredibly deep history. It’s a sprawling sci-fi saga where every battle and magical event feels connected to what came before, building up over decades. Now, the stories have become so complex that even the tiniest details – like how a little alien ended up with Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber – can send fans into a frenzy. It’s amazing how much mystery they’ve created!
With Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the beloved franchise entered a new chapter, and the subsequent trilogy aimed to move the story forward. However, now that the trilogy has concluded, it’s become apparent that some storylines didn’t quite land and several questions remain unanswered, such as the unresolved hint Maz Kanata offered about a major secret.
The Skywalker Lightsaber Carries a Huge History
Anakin Skywalker built the lightsaber that would become known as the Skywalker family lightsaber, and it first appeared in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones. This lightsaber suited Anakin’s powerful and forceful fighting style, and it played a key role in many important events, including the start of the Clone Wars and throughout galactic history.
As a huge Star Wars fan, it’s always struck me how Anakin’s fall to the dark side wasn’t immediately marked by a red lightsaber. Initially, he shockingly used his blue blade to commit terrible acts – the slaughter of Jedi and younglings at the Temple, and wiping out most of the Trade Federation. It wasn’t until his duel with Obi-Wan, where Obi-Wan ultimately defeated him, that his blue lightsaber was taken and he would eventually wield a red one.
After Obi-Wan Kenobi safeguarded the lightsaber, it passed to Luke Skywalker, who exchanged it for a green one after becoming a Jedi. The original blue blade’s fate remained unclear for a long time. Eventually, Maz Kanata gave it to Finn, and later Rey. It was damaged during a battle, then repaired, and ultimately laid to rest with Leia’s lightsaber on Tatooine.
This lightsaber isn’t particularly striking to look at, but its past is extraordinary. The fact that it’s been passed down through so many owners and involved in countless significant – and sometimes questionable – events makes for a truly remarkable story. It’s a weapon with a hugely important history, although some parts of that history remain unknown.
Star Wars Never Explains How Maz Got the Skywalker Lightsaber
Maz Kanata, introduced in The Force Awakens, is portrayed as an ancient and insightful character, reminiscent of Yoda but with a more energetic and playful personality. While it was enjoyable to see her manage her cantina, her conversations with Finn and Rey hinted at a long and eventful life shaped by experiences across the galaxy.
It wasn’t an issue that Maz ended up with Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber and took good care of it. The real problem is that she hints to Finn there’s a story behind how she got it, but never actually shares it. Even after many years, that backstory remains unexplained. However, some fans have come up with possible explanations.
Maz is a collector with many connections, so she may have been specifically chosen to protect the blade, or she might have simply found it and kept it hidden. Given her mysterious and insightful nature, it’s likely she knew the blade would be needed again, and she gave it to Finn because she sensed his connection to the Force. However, Rey was different – her very existence seemed unexpected, changing things entirely.
The Skywalker lightsaber clearly chooses its wielder, and both Finn and Rey demonstrated this throughout the sequel trilogy, as their destinies were profoundly altered by it. While the reason behind its choices remains unexplained, this unanswered question ultimately taught fans a valuable lesson.
Star Wars’ Story Proves That Some Mysteries Don’t Need Answers (Even if Fans Want Them)
Since Disney bought Star Wars, the storytelling and character development have been inconsistent, especially in the sequel trilogy which contained some questionable choices. Despite its flaws, a key takeaway from those films was the value of the journey itself, not just the destination.
The fact that we never learn how Maz got Luke’s lightsaber actually works in the story’s favor. It shows that not every question needs a concrete answer, and that the meaning lies in the moment. The lightsaber represents a hero’s weapon, and its presence is only truly important when there’s a conflict to face. Maz likely has a complicated history with the saber, but its backstory isn’t necessarily crucial or even compelling.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I’ve always thought the stories work best when things happen and then we deal with the consequences. It’s cool to get more details sometimes, like with Rogue One, but not every story needs a super detailed backstory. Take the Bothans who sacrificed themselves to get the Death Star plans – it’s powerful enough to just know they did it! Sometimes, knowing less is actually better. Honestly, Maz doesn’t need to give a whole explanation about how she got that ancient relic when it’s suddenly needed to win the fight. The impact of it just being there is enough, you know?
Hearing these stories and learning about the vastness of the Star Wars universe is exciting, but that universe is intentionally huge – meaning there are countless unanswered questions and stories. We may never get all the explanations fans want, and ultimately, what’s important is whether the story feels satisfying. That’s what happened with Maz and the Skywalker lightsaber. Even if some details remain unclear, knowing how the story starts and ends is what truly matters.
