Netflix’s Mating Season’s Season 2 & Beyond Return Potential Addressed By Creator

Nick Kroll, the creator of the adult animated show Mating Season, has talked about the possibility of the show’s animal characters having more explicit romantic encounters in future seasons.

The first season of the adult animated comedy Mating Season launched on Netflix on May 22nd, following its announcement in April 2025. The show centers around four animal friends – Josh the fox (voiced by Zach Woods), Ray the raccoon (Nick Kroll), Fawn the deer (June Diane Raphael), and Penelope the red fox (Sabrina Jalees) – and their often explicit explorations of love and relationships. The season consists of ten episodes, and while it’s currently unknown if the show will be renewed, Nick Kroll has indicated he’d like to continue the series.

During a conversation with Ash Crossan from ScreenRant, Nick Kroll—co-creator of the series Mating Season alongside Andrew Goldberg, Mark Levin, and Jennifer Flackett—was asked if he had a long-term vision for the show’s duration. Kroll jokingly responded that it would last as long as the studio allowed. Fellow creator, Brett Woods, then chimed in, playfully suggesting the show could run for at least twelve years based on his own childhood experiences with long-running series.

Viewership numbers for the animated series Mating Season, produced by Titmouse Inc., haven’t been made public yet. However, the show has received a 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, suggesting a promising start. It’s currently unclear if Netflix will renew the show for a second season or cancel it after one, but creator Andrew Kroll has expressed interest in continuing the series for multiple seasons.

This week’s must-see Netflix show boasts a talented supporting cast in addition to its main stars. Featured players include Abbi Jacobson as Summer the foxhound, Timothy Olyphant as Dylan the wolf, Jack McBrayer as Geoffrey the owl, Annaleigh Ashford as Addy the swan, and Ana Gasteyer and Clancy Brown as Josh’s parents, Ellen and Robert, who have a lively love life.

Kroll’s newest project for Netflix is Mating Season. He previously appeared on The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt in 2015, and his Broadway show Oh, Hello! – which he performed with John Mulaney – was released on the platform in 2017. That recording featured Steve Martin and Matthew Broderick, and a separate clip was also released with a guest appearance by Michael J. Fox.

2017 marked a significant achievement with the debut of Big Mouth, the first animated series on Netflix from Kroll, Goldberg, Levin, and Flackett. Similar to Mating Season, the show centered on themes of sexuality, with Kroll providing the voice for a character based on his younger self, alongside other roles. Woods also contributed voice work to the series. Big Mouth received widespread critical praise over its eight seasons, leading the creators to collaborate with Kelly Galuska on a spin-off, Human Resources, which lasted for two seasons.

Following his role in the comedy film Roommates with Sadie Sandler and Chloe East, Kroll appeared in season one of Mating Season on Netflix. He also voiced a character in the animated movie Goat, which is now available to stream on Netflix after a February theatrical release.

All episodes of Mating Season are now streaming on Netflix.
