Sebastian Stan Reveals Surprising MCU Fate Ahead of Shocking DC Debut

It’s quite ironic that Sebastian Stan, best known for playing a hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe who instantly becomes a villain with a single phrase, recently shared his thoughts on joining DC Studios for The Batman Part II. His move to a rival studio is surprising, to say the least.

Interestingly, the word “departure” might not be the best way to describe this, which many people find surprising.

Sources say Lee Stan will share top billing with Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) in the upcoming The Batman Part II, when Robert Pattinson returns as Bruce Wayne in 2027. However, Stan has confirmed that appearing in the film won’t stop him from continuing to work on Marvel Cinematic Universe projects.

Following his return as Bucky Barnes, also known as the Winter Soldier, in Avengers: Doomsday and as part of the Thunderbolts team, Sebastian Stan has hinted that he expects to continue working with Marvel Studios for the foreseeable future, despite previous speculation to the contrary.

Sebastian Stan Isn’t Done With MCU, Despite The Batman Debut

In other words, .

Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival, Stan described the possibility of continuing his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after the release of Avengers: Doomsday in December 2026 as feeling like reconnecting with a long-lost sibling. He explained to ComicBookMovie.com that he’s enjoyed the familiarity of returning to the franchise every few years and hopes to continue doing so.

Marvel and its fans will be thrilled to hear that Bucky Barnes will continue to be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since his introduction in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, Bucky has been a key character in the MCU’s overall story. He played an important role in the The Falcon and The Winter Soldier series on Disney+, which ultimately led to Sam Wilson becoming the new Captain America, as seen at the end of Avengers: Endgame. Nobody wants to see this character leave!

Will The Winter Soldier Meet His End in Avengers: Doomsday?

As a huge Marvel fan, I really think Bucky still has a lot of story left to tell. I was a little worried when it seemed like his fate might be sealed by Doom – especially with Robert Downey Jr. playing him – but honestly, reading between the lines of what Sebastian Stan has said, it doesn’t sound like Bucky’s going anywhere permanently. And let’s be real, death isn’t really final in the Marvel universe anymore, not with the multiverse allowing characters to come back from just about anything!

Despite some fan theories, Stan confirms that Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier, will not become Captain America. He explains his reasons clearly, effectively ending the discussion – though not entirely closing the door on the possibility.

He questioned why anyone would entrust the role to someone who’s been actively trying to forge a new path, separate from his past constraints. He recalled learning about Falcon taking on the mantle during filming, saying, “It all clicked then.” He added that it made sense, as Sam Wilson had consistently served as Steve Rogers’ close partner and dependable ally for a significant period.

It’s understandable that Bucky Barnes won’t be Captain America, especially with Steve Rogers returning as Nomad. And it’s great to hear that Stan is enjoying playing roles in both the Marvel and DC universes – as The Winter Soldier and Harvey Dent/Two-Face – and is happy with the opportunity!
