Warning! This article contains spoilers for The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Recent reviews of The Mandalorian and Grogu have criticized it in several ways. Some say it feels like a few TV episodes stretched into a movie, while others find the story uninspired and lacking in genuine conflict, sticking too closely to familiar ground. However, almost no one can fault the film for its abundance of action.
Jon Favreau created this movie primarily to deliver non-stop action. Every few minutes, the main character, Mando, is in a new fight or chase, and the audience gets to simply enjoy the spectacle. Essentially, The Mandalorian and Grogu is a collection of action scenes lasting two hours, though the quality of those scenes varies.
10. Rotta’s First Match
Okay, so even the least exciting action sequence in this film is still pretty good – it just doesn’t quite reach the heights of the others. It features Rotta the Hutt, who’s seriously bulked up now, going toe-to-toe with a really imposing human gladiator in a fight pit. It’s a solid scene, just not the most unforgettable.
This scene feels like a lighter, family-friendly take on the Gladiator films, mainly serving to establish Rotta as a skilled fighter. It finishes with a humorous moment as Rotta wins by unexpectedly crushing his opponent.
9. Mando Fights Lord Janu’s Goons
When Din Djarin, known as Mando, goes to confront Lord Janu at a cantina, a heavily-built guard stops him and immediately sends a group of attackers after him. The scene is excitingly filmed with dynamic camera movements and well-executed fighting, and it’s notable that Mando seems to restrain himself during the close-quarters combat.
He’s normally a fierce fighter, similar to John Wick, but in this case, he’s not trying to harm anyone seriously. He just needs to hold these people still long enough to get a message to their leader, so he’s careful with his attacks, relying on both his skills and his tools to quickly subdue them.
8. A Poisoned Mando Covers Grogu’s Escape
Once Grogu’s mechanic friends manage to get Mando back to their small ship, it becomes obvious he’s too big to fit inside. He tells them to go on without him, choosing to stay and buy them time to escape. Meanwhile, Mando fights his way through the forest, destroying droids as he goes.
What actually happens in this scene isn’t particularly exciting, but the way it’s presented is incredibly powerful and emotionally affecting. It genuinely feels like Mando is in serious danger, even though it’s unlikely Disney would eliminate such a popular character.
7. Mando & Grogu Chase Rotta Across The City
Once Mando and Rotta manage to escape the arena, Rotta makes a run for it, jumping into a speeder and racing away. Grogu gives chase in his floating carrier, with Mando quickly following on his jetpack.
Even without the monsters, the pursuit would have been exciting. But now, with creatures running wild in the streets, things are really intense. And the city itself is beautiful – it feels like stepping into the world of Blade Runner with all the neon lights.
6. The Final Battle
The season finale of The Mandalorian and Grogu is essentially one long, action-packed battle. While it’s enjoyable, it feels quite draining. It suffers from the same issue as the final fight in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum: it’s relentlessly continuous – fight after fight, explosion after explosion – and becomes overwhelming. At least Parabellum had a clear culmination with John Wick falling from a skyscraper, which provided a dramatic endpoint.
The last fight in The Mandalorian and Grogu tries to feel important – there’s a ticking clock with New Republic ships incoming, a blocked escape route, and a dangerous fall – but ultimately, nothing significant changes, making it more about flashy visuals than real consequences. However, it’s still filled with exciting scenes, like Mando’s knife fight reminiscent of Dune 2, Grogu using the Force to help Rotta, and the return of the little mechanics with reinforcements.
5. A Bounty Hunter Arrives On Mando’s Homestead
About halfway through the movie, a bounty hunter and his fierce wolf show up at the Mandalorian’s home in the middle of the night, sent by the Hutts to capture him. While the fight itself isn’t very thrilling – it’s odd that the Mandalorian decided the best defense was to shoot a hole in his own roof – the scene is visually impressive.
While The Mandalorian and Grogu doesn’t fully earn its theatrical release, the scene of the bounty hunter arriving at the homestead during a stormy night was stunning on the big screen. It had a classic, cinematic feel, reminiscent of a Kurosawa samurai film.
4. Mando Fights The Dragonsnake
The fight with the Dragonsnake, much like the show’s final battle, feels a little drawn out. The sequence, from the initial encounter with the young creatures to the showdown with the adult, starts to lose momentum. Being stuck in that underwater environment for so long becomes tedious, though it’s a visually impressive setup. It’s reminiscent of Luke Skywalker’s fight with the rancor, but the murky, deep water adds an extra layer of danger.
Throughout this scene, we see Mando without his helmet for almost the entire time – a bit challenging for Pedro Pascal, as the shoot mostly took place in a water tank! This really lets the audience connect with his emotions – you can see his fear, anger, and strong will to live. Pascal delivers a powerful performance, and this single scene alone proves why he’s the lead.
3. Mando & Zeb Capture Commander Coin
The scene where Mando and Zeb raid Commander Coin’s property begins with a typical firefight in a narrow space. It’s reminiscent of a chaotic bar fight from a western, complete with classic gangster movie elements – like someone firing a machine gun at a table where the heroes are taking cover.
The episode starts with familiar elements, including Mando’s signature line, “I can bring you in warm, or I can bring you in cold.” But things get exciting when they race back to the Razor Crest with a large group of Stormtroopers pursuing them. The fast-paced chase is made even more amusing by the funny conversation between Mando and Grogu – Mando is trying to guide Grogu through the launch sequence, while Grogu is playfully firing off all the ship’s missiles.
2. The Opening AT-AT Chase
The new season of The Mandalorian and Grogu starts with a thrilling opening sequence and one of its most impressive action scenes. The first scene quickly shows Din Djarin’s new job – tracking down former Imperial soldiers for the New Republic – and it’s packed with excitement. He pursues a fugitive down a mountainside, narrowly avoids a group of AT-AT walkers, and ultimately shoots his target out of the sky.
Each time Mando jetpacks away from an exploding AT-AT, the scene gets even more exciting. The action reaches a peak when the villain escapes in an escape pod, leaving behind a trail of bombs. Grogu’s playful tapping on Mando’s helmet is the first of many funny visual moments, brilliantly brought to life by the puppeteers. And it was a welcome surprise to see Zeb from Rebels show up to pick them up.
1. Mando & Rotta’s Dejarik Match
The movie’s standout action scene is definitely the Dejarik match between Mando and Rotta. This sequence is a fully realized version of the holographic chess game briefly seen in the original Star Wars, and it’s the most impressive hidden nod to the franchise in the whole film. Even if you’re not familiar with the reference, it’s the most exciting part of the movie – though the truly special part is the incredible puppetry.
Things are escalating quickly for Mando! First, he’s forced to fight Rotta to the death, and then, even after finding a way to release Rotta from his obligation, the arena is filled with the galaxy’s most dangerous monsters. While The Mandalorian and Grogu is full of exciting action, this sequence is the most thrilling yet.
