Witch Hat Atelier Episode 9 Review: Qifrey Lies & Magic Can’t Heal

The story is now exploring the darker aspects of the magical world’s past. It’s revealing how problems began with the rigid rules established on the Day of the Pact. This week’s episode explains the origin of a major issue: all healing magic is now forbidden.

Episode 9 of Witch Hat Atelier, titled “A Nightmare Stained in Black,” explores feelings of desperation and loss, and hints at a forgotten skill that could offer a solution. The episode refocuses on the main characters, Coco and Qifrey, and reveals a serious flaw in the beliefs of a society that ultimately causes more damage than benefit.

The Restrictive Laws of Witches Makes Coco’s Ultimate Goal an Impossibility

The central frightening scene in Episode 9 mirrors a key moment from Chapter 14, brilliantly showing how overwhelmed the main character feels with guilt. Coco has achieved her lifelong dream of becoming a witch, but it came at a terrible price: the loss of her mother.

The disturbing dream shows how effectively Coco masks her hidden struggles. Despite still loving magic, Coco is losing sleep due to the intense training she’s doing, all in an effort to bring her mother back to normal.

Things get even more complicated for Coco when Qifrey privately admits that resurrecting her mother might be against the law. The Wise Ones, who created the Day of the Pact, specifically banned magic on corpses, and that includes any kind of healing.

The most helpful application of magic was actually outlawed. We first witness the repercussions of this in Episode 8, when the Knights Moralis Luluci deliberately withheld magical healing from Custas and falsely told Dagda that magic couldn’t perform such a treatment.

Episode 9 highlights the negative consequences of the Pact’s law when Coco gets sick. Because of the law, Qifrey had to spend valuable time taking her to a regular hospital in the next town instead of using magic to help her right away, even though her fever was getting worse quickly.

Iguin Unveils the Greatest Flaw of the Pointed Caps’ Ideology

While everyone else in the workshop was sleeping, Qifrey started carefully examining Coco’s ink bottle, which was shown to have been messed with in the previous episode.

After healing magic was forbidden, many spells were also outlawed, including the ‘Twin Bottles’ spell. This spell let people share the contents of any container with another, and was often used to quickly provide vital medicine when needed.

The Twin Bottles spell had the potential to heal people comfortably at home, which would have been especially helpful when Coco became ill at the workshop. However, Iguin, a supporter of dangerous, forbidden magic, instead used it to mix his blood with ink, ultimately turning an entire river into dust.

Iguin’s repeated encouragement of Coco to use risky magic explains why the Day of the Pact happened. But simply banning healing magic didn’t fix the underlying issue.

I saw something disturbing happen with Iguin. He took a healing spell – one designed to help people recover – and twisted it to cause harm. It really struck me that it wasn’t the magic itself that was the problem, but how he chose to use it. It was a clear example that some people will always find a way to misuse even the most benevolent powers.

Qifrey’s Encounter With Iguin Proves the Danger of his Obssession

Qifrey has always been a mysterious figure, ever since he took Coco on as an apprentice with a hidden agenda: to use her to locate the Brimmed Caps. Each glimpse of his darker nature – from his intimidating stare at Nolnoa to wiping the elder witch’s memory in Episode 8 – makes us wonder more and more about his true motives.

Episode 9 of Witch Hat Atelier doesn’t reveal what Qifrey lost, but it confirms he did lose something because of the Brimmed Caps. He’s now pursuing them in an attempt to get it back.

I’ve been watching Qifrey, and his journey isn’t about getting revenge. It’s driven by a deep need to get back what he’s lost, but I can tell it’s a dangerous road he’s on, one with serious risks.

When Qifrey tried to remove the magically-engraved medal from the ink bottle, he got too close to Iguin. A built-in safety feature shocked him, causing numbness, and then unleashed a sudden flood of water that almost resulted in him drowning.

We’ve established that Qifrey is a skilled and potent magic user, but this confrontation with the Brimmed Caps reveals his relentless quest is incredibly risky, not only for others, but for himself as well.

Witch Hat Atelier Episode 9 Perfectly Ends at a Heavy Cliffhanger

Episode 9 of Witch Hat Atelier brought back several elements from earlier in the series. Coco’s dream revisited conversations that have been weighing on her conscience. The episode also gave more insight into Qifrey, rewarding viewers who have been following his mysterious backstory. Notably, the episode began and ended with Tartah, a key character from Episode 8.

Episode 9 really gets to the heart of the anime’s central conflict. It includes meaningful character interactions and expands on the world, setting the stage for what’s coming next and smoothly transitioning into the next part of the story.

The episode concludes with Tartah facing off against Qifrey in Kalhn, echoing the ending of Chapter 15 in the original manga. This scene prioritizes a visually symbolic shot of Tartah and Qifrey facing each other, rather than another frightening moment featuring Qifrey.

I noticed Tartah turning towards the light, his gaze fixed on Qifrey, seemingly seeking answers. It was striking – a shadow fell across Qifrey’s face, obscuring his features, as he stood with his back to the sun. The building behind them seemed to emphasize the distance between the two; Tartah was positioned in the warm, safe space of the hospital entrance, while Qifrey was framed against a harsh, cold stone wall.

What truly sets this scene apart is the fact that the people of Kalhn are walking in the shadows, representing their unawareness of the magic that could transform their lives.
