Timothy Olyphant’s New 10-Part Netflix Series Is Now An American Streaming Hit

Timothy Olyphant‘s new show on Netflix is already a streaming hit.

The actor, who has been nominated for three Emmys and is known for his work on shows like Justified and Deadwood, has worked with the streaming service before. He previously starred in the horror comedy Santa Clarita Diet alongside Drew Barrymore, which gained a dedicated fanbase over its three seasons.

Olyphant’s new animated comedy, Mating Season, is quickly becoming popular on Netflix. Just days after its release on May 22nd, it’s already reached the #6 spot, surpassing shows like Bad Thoughts, Perfect Match, and Wanda Sykes’ recent comedy special.

From the team behind Big Mouth comes a new 10-episode Netflix series exploring the animal kingdom. It tells relatable stories about love, sex, and relationships, focusing on the basic instinct to find a mate and have offspring – whether you’re a bear, raccoon, deer, or fox. Ray Liotta (credited as Dylan McDermott, and unrelated to the actor of the same name) appears in a recurring role as a wolf who develops feelings for one of the show’s central characters.

The show centers around Penelope, a lesbian red fox brought to life by the voice of Sabrina Jalees. Joining her are other key characters like Josh, a bear voiced by Zach Woods, Ray the raccoon (Nick Kroll), and Fawn the deer, voiced by June Diane Raphael. Abbi Jacobson, Jack McBrayer, Annaleigh Ashford, Ana Gasteyer, and Clancy Brown also return as recurring voices.

Fans of the show Big Mouth are likely to enjoy Mating Season, as it shares a similar style of crude humor and is made by many of the same people. However, the main reason Netflix viewers will be interested is Big Mouth‘s impressive run on the platform. The series lasted for eight seasons with a total of 81 episodes, airing from September 2017 to May 2025, and included appearances by well-known celebrities like Jon Hamm, Seth Rogen, and Cynthia Erivo.

It’s still too soon to know if Mating Season will be a long-term hit. Initial reviews are mostly good, with a 75% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 8 reviews. While many agree it’s not quite as strong as Big Mouth yet, it’s worth watching just to hear Timothy Olyphant play a character very different from his usual roles.

All episodes of Mating Season are on Netflix.
