The Mandalorian and Grogu sets unexpected Star Wars record despite mixed reviews

Despite mixed reviews, The Mandalorian and Grogu has become the most-watched Star Wars content ever. The new season, featuring Baby Yoda and Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin, premiered earlier this month and has been a hit with fans of the series.

Directed by Jon Favreau, who co-wrote the script with Dave Filoni and Noah Kloor, The Mandalorian and Grogu follows the Disney+ series The Mandalorian, which first introduced Grogu/Baby Yoda to adoring audiences.

The film, which features Sigourney Weaver, Jeremy Allen White, and Martin Scorsese, has received the best audience score on Rotten Tomatoes of any Star Wars movie released since Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012.

Okay, so I’ve been checking out the audience scores on Popcornmeter, and The Mandalorian and Grogu is seriously popular! With over 5,000 verified ratings, it’s sitting at 89%, which makes it the fourth highest-rated Star Wars movie overall. It’s right behind the original trilogy, and The Empire Strikes Back is still king with a whopping 97%!

The new Grogu and bounty hunter film is receiving surprisingly negative reviews. With a 61% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 244 reviews, critics are calling it the weakest entry in the Star Wars saga – one publication described it as “the least essential, least engaging, least necessary” – while others have labeled it “bloated” and “dull.”

Digital Spy gave The Mandalorian and Grogu two stars, branding it Star Wars “at its most underwhelming”.

What to Read Next

Our review says this Star Wars film isn’t necessarily the worst one, but it’s arguably the least important – and that actually makes it more disappointing.

Picking up where the 2019 series left off, The Mandalorian and Grogu finds the pair working for the New Republic. They’re sent on a mission to rescue Rotta the Hutt—Jabba the Hutt’s son, voiced by Chris White—in return for valuable information.

The Mandalorian and Grogu is out now in cinemas.
