The new Star Wars film, The Mandalorian And Grogu, came out in theaters on Friday, but it had the lowest opening weekend box office numbers of any film in the franchise so far.
The new Star Wars movie starring Pedro Pascal brought in $82 million during its first weekend, making it the lowest-grossing opening weekend for a Star Wars film since Disney bought the franchise in 2012, reports Variety.
However, it will bring in an estimated $102 million through Memorial Day.
And The Wrap reported it will rake in an estimated $165 million worldwide.
Following the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story in 2018 – which earned $84 million in its opening weekend (or $112 million adjusted for inflation, according to Fox News) – came The Mandalorian And Grogu.
Based on those numbers, The Mandalorian earned $30 million less on its opening weekend than the previous show did.
Solo earned $103 million at the box office on Memorial Day, which equals $139 million when accounting for inflation. This puts the opening weekend for The Mandalorian behind Solo by $37 million.
The newest Star Wars film cost around $165 million to make. Critics at Rotten Tomatoes gave it a ‘Fresh’ rating of 62%, while audiences scored it at 89%.
The Jon Favreau-directed film stars Pascal, 51, as the enigmatic Din Djarin, aka The Mandalorian.
It sees Djarin reunite with loyal ward Grogu, an infant member of the same alien race as Yoda.
Ahead of its theatrical release last week, the movie received terrible reviews.
The Times rated the film one star, claiming it effectively ended the Star Wars franchise.
Kevin Maher expressed his belief that the Star Wars franchise has declined so much that ending it would be a kindness, comparing it to euthanizing a suffering animal. He wrote, ‘You wouldn’t leave a dying dog like this… Putting it down would be a mercy killing.’
Meanwhile, The Telegraph awarded two stars, while delivering a proportionately scathing review.
According to Robbie Collin, Disney has been aiming to make Star Wars as consistently popular as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While ‘The Mandalorian’ and Grogu have achieved some success in that regard, Collin suggests the show often feels like a forgettable installment in a long-running series you stopped watching a while ago.
The Independent gave the show another two-star review, faulting Jon Favreau for using too many computer-generated effects. They noted that while Grogu is undeniably adorable, he’s become more of a plot device – something to show when the characters need a break from talking – rather than a fully developed character.
The clever puppetry used in the show is weakened by the frequent and awkward mixing of practical puppets with completely computer-generated characters. This reliance on CGI, especially with characters like The Mandalorian and Grogu, has unfortunately diminished the sense of magic and amazement that Star Wars once held.
Oh my gosh, The Hollywood Reporter got it! They called it an absolutely thrilling, super-fun, and breakneck-speed space adventure, and honestly? They said it feels like a Star Wars movie, and that’s exactly what it is! I knew it was amazing, and it’s incredible to see someone else recognize the magic!
However, the publication also found the plot weak, and stated that the story felt limited and unimportant in its scope and ideas.
It’s difficult to picture someone seeing this as their introduction to Star Wars and becoming a lifelong fan, like so many people who experienced the original movies in cinemas did.
