Netflix’s New Big Mouth Replacement Turns Into an Instant Streaming Hit After Solid RT Score

Netflix’s hit show Big Mouth, a funny and musical animated series about growing up, was co-created by and stars Nick Kroll. Since it first came out in 2017, critics have praised the show. Now, after a brief pause, Kroll has a new adult animated sitcom that’s quickly become popular on streaming platforms.

According to FlixPatrol, the show is currently the sixth most popular on Netflix in the U.S. It’s also gaining traction internationally, performing well in countries like Australia, Canada, and Finland. Currently, it’s the third most-watched show in the Bahamas and second in Jamaica. This success comes quickly after the show premiered on Netflix on May 22nd.

What Is Mating Season About?

Mark Levin, Jennifer Flackett, Andrew Goldberg, and Nick Kroll—the creators of Big Mouth—are also behind Mating Season. According to Netflix, this new adult animated series is a romantic comedy that explores love, sex, relationships, and the drive to find a partner and have offspring, all through the lens of the animal kingdom.

I’m really enjoying this show! Nick Kroll voices Ray, a hilarious raccoon, and June Diane Raphael is perfect as Fawn the deer. Zach Woods plays Josh, a pretty funny bear, and Sabrina Jalees is great as Penelope the fox. Plus, they get a ton of awesome guest stars like Sarah Silverman, Jason Mantzoukas, and even David Duchovny! It’s a really fun cast.

Mating Season Received Positive Reviews from Critics

Like Big Mouth, Mating Season received positive reviews. Currently, it has a 75% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on reviews from critics. Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com praised the show, noting that while it’s funny to see these situations played out with animals, it’s even better when the show focuses on smart, witty humor instead of just being crude.

“Mating Season” doesn’t offer anything totally new, and viewers familiar with “Big Mouth” will recognize similar themes. However, because the show isn’t trying to be shocking, it can focus on its core ideas more directly and authentically, without feeling the need to constantly one-up its previous work.

Currently, Mating Season has a 6.4 rating on IMDb from a little over 300 reviews. On Metacritic, it has a score of 65 from critics and a 5.4 from users. Because the show only came out two days ago, these ratings could change as more people watch it.

Despite what critics are saying, Mating Season is proving to be popular on Netflix. It’s already trending in many countries after only two days, and it has the potential to become even more successful. It could even become a defining show of the 2020s.

All episodes of Mating Season are available to stream on Netflix.
