The horror movie Obsession premiered in theaters last weekend and has quickly become popular with both audiences and reviewers. With a $17 million opening weekend in the US, discussions about a sequel are already underway.
Curry Barker, who wrote and directed the film, has said he’d like to make a sequel, but he acknowledges there’s a significant flaw in the story.
The series Obsession centers on Baron “Bear” Bailey (Michael Johnston), who has long been in love with his childhood friend, Nikki (Inde Navarrette), but struggles to tell her how he feels. Hoping to change things, Bear buys a “One Wish Willow” from a metaphysical shop – a charm said to come true when broken.

Bear is upset with Nikki and wishes she loved him above all others. Given the movie’s title, it’s not hard to predict the consequences of that wish.
In an interview with Total Film, Curry acknowledged that the magical abilities of the One Wish Willow aren’t entirely logical, and this could affect plans for any future installments.
What to Read Next
He acknowledged there was a flaw in the story. “It bothers me,” he said, “because it doesn’t really add up that an entire world exists solely based on people’s wishes.”
It just doesn’t add up. If the One Wish Willow truly worked, as the story suggests, we’d expect to see some major changes – things like dragons appearing, for example. But the world in this movie seems perfectly normal, which doesn’t quite fit with the idea of a wish-granting tree.
Curry explained that whenever someone makes a wish, they actually shift into a different reality where that wish is fulfilled. This means we don’t experience everyone’s wishes happening all at once.
He explained that the situation didn’t add up, comparing it to a scene in the movie where money literally falls from the ceiling. He concluded by saying, “It’s just broken.”
Even though Curry acknowledged some possible issues, the author still appears interested in continuing to develop the world of Obsession.

Curry mentioned he’s looking forward to a few upcoming projects, and specifically hinted at a possible Obsession 2.
What I find really exciting is the idea of an anthology series – maybe an hour-long show where each episode features a wish that goes hilariously wrong.
I’m thinking I could direct the pilot with the same cinematographer, and we could also ask other filmmakers to share their creative ideas on it. That would be fantastic.
Obsession is out now in cinemas.
