Prime Video has a great selection of classic Westerns featuring many of the genre’s biggest stars. You can find notable films from a long list of actors who helped shape the Western in the 20th century, with some performers appearing in dozens of these iconic movies throughout their careers.
While many famous actors – including Glenn Ford, Joel McCrea, Gary Cooper, Burt Lancaster, and James Stewart – appeared in several excellent Westerns, they weren’t defined by the genre. Actors like Randolph Scott, Charles Bronson, and Sam Elliott, however, will always be strongly associated with Westerns. John Wayne and Robert Mitchum both became known for two types of films: Wayne for Westerns and war movies, and Mitchum for Westerns and classic film noir.
These actors are all legendary figures in Western films. Luckily, many of their movies are readily available to stream online. Prime Video, for example, offers a wide selection of films starring John Wayne, Gary Cooper, Randolph Scott, Robert Mitchum, Clint Eastwood, and Burt Lancaster. Each of these six stars has at least one film on Prime Video that’s considered essential viewing.
Clint Eastwood – High Plains Drifter
Prime Video has several classic Clint Eastwood Westerns available, including Two Mules for Sister Sara, Paint Your Wagon, Hang ‘Em High, and High Plains Drifter. While both Hang ‘Em High and High Plains Drifter are excellent Westerns, many consider High Plains Drifter to be the stronger film, skillfully blending a supernatural story with a classic revenge plot.
The film features Clint Eastwood as a mysterious gunslinger who arrives in town and causes trouble for everyone. As the story unfolds, it feels like his character might be the ghost of a man the townspeople wrongly killed. This blend of horror and Western elements works surprisingly well, fitting Eastwood’s established style of playing complex, morally ambiguous characters in bleak and realistic Westerns.
Clint Eastwood consistently portrays powerfully intimidating characters, even in Westerns that aren’t explicitly horror films, like Fistful of Dollars and Unforgiven. These characters feel dangerous and commanding. He takes this even further in High Plains Drifter, delivering one of his most frightening and imposing performances.
John Wayne
Several of John Wayne’s early Westerns from the 1930s are available to stream on Prime Video because they are now in the public domain. While most of these were inexpensive and not particularly memorable, they were made before he became a major star. Also available is Stagecoach, the 1939 film that truly launched his career. This groundbreaking Western included a now-iconic scene that represents Wayne’s rise to fame in Hollywood.
Right from the start, when John Wayne’s character, the Ringo Kid, stops the stagecoach headed for Lordsburg, it’s obvious that Stagecoach is his film, despite Claire Trevor being listed as the main star. Though Wayne wasn’t yet famous, his captivating performance immediately puts him in charge of the narrative. The movie takes audiences on a lengthy desert trek, leading to what is considered one of the most exciting and memorable action scenes in Western history.
Randolph Scott – Last Of The Mohicans
Prime Video has some good Randolph Scott Westerns, including titles like Canadian Pacific and Wild Horse Mesa. One of the highlights is his early film, The Last of the Mohicans. In this movie, Scott plays Hawkeye, a white man raised by the Mohican tribe who understands their culture—a departure from the typical cowboy roles he’d later become known for. Hawkeye then guides a group through dangerous territory controlled by warring Mohawks.
The film sets up a promising love story for Hawkeye with one of the characters he’s protecting, features exciting action, and looks beautiful thanks to its excellent camerawork. It’s not surprising that the Randolph Scott film has a high 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The 1936 film, adapted from a popular novel, was later remade in 1992 starring Daniel Day-Lewis. This remake was a critical and commercial success, winning an Academy Award and remaining one of Day-Lewis’s most celebrated performances. Although the original film isn’t as well-known, it also effectively tells the story and features a compelling main character, Hawkeye.
Burt Lancaster – Vera Cruz
Prime Video has several great Westerns starring Burt Lancaster, including films like The Kentuckian, The Devil’s Disciple, Apache, and Lawman. However, none of these quite measure up to Vera Cruz, a standout movie where Lancaster shares the screen with Gary Cooper. The film follows a soldier and a former Confederate veteran as they join forces to protect a captivating countess on her journey to Veracruz.
With a lively cast and strong performances from Burt Lancaster and Cooper, Vera Cruz is a genuinely fun Western. But it’s more than just entertaining; the film also skillfully explores the grittier side of the Western genre to create complex characters. In fact, it was influential enough to inspire Sergio Leone, a pioneer of Spaghetti Westerns.
Robert Mitchum – The Man With The Gun
Robert Mitchum, known for his cool and rugged image, is considered one of the best leading actors in Westerns. His talent shines in The Man with the Gun. This 1955 black-and-white film stars Mitchum as Clint Tollinger, a hired gun who brings order to lawless towns by eliminating crime and corruption.
Robert Mitchum is perfectly cast in this role, as he excels at playing complex characters. He plays Clint Tollinger, the story’s hero, but also a man brimming with self-assurance. This confidence allows him to take charge and make decisions for the town, even when others strongly disagree. While he sees himself as doing what’s best, the townspeople view his actions as threatening to their way of life, effectively making him the villain in their eyes.
Gary Cooper – Man Of The West
Prime Video features two classic Westerns starring Gary Cooper, one of which is Vera Cruz. The other, Man of the West (1956), has a unique story. It feels like a 1940s film noir, but set in the Wild West. In the film, Cooper plays Link Jones, a man who appears mild-mannered and upstanding, as he tries to find a teacher for his town. However, he gets caught up with a dangerous gang, and it becomes clear that Link is hiding a more complex past.
Link Jones is an interesting Western hero because he’s not simply good or bad. He’s different from the purely heroic characters popular in 1950s Westerns, like those played by Gary Cooper, but he’s also not quite the morally complex anti-hero seen in films like The Searchers or Clint Eastwood’s Westerns. Jones embodies aspects of both types: his loyalty to his wife and pursuit of a worthy goal make him seem like a traditional hero, but he also has a darker, more compelling side that emerges at times.
