Netflix’s Philip K. Dick Adaptation Fills The Void After Dune 3

Director Denis Villeneuve has stated that Dune: Part Three will be the final installment he directs in the series. What happens with the Dune franchise after that is still uncertain, but a new science fiction adaptation coming to Netflix might appeal to fans. This Netflix project is based on a well-regarded story by Philip K. Dick, a famous science fiction author, and it has similarities to the world of Dune.

As a longtime fan, I’ve always been fascinated by how filmmakers tackle Philip K. Dick’s work – it’s notoriously tricky to bring his ideas to the screen! We’ve seen a few successful adaptations over the years. Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner took inspiration from Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, but Steven Spielberg and Richard Linklater went further, directly adapting Minority Report and A Scanner Darkly, respectively. It’s always interesting to see these visions realized, and sometimes, a little changed, for the big screen.

The 1990 film Total Recall and the series The Man in the High Castle are both based on stories by Philip K. Dick, and are considered successful adaptations of his work. Now, Netflix is adapting Dick’s lesser-known 1956 novel, The World Jones Made. Given the novel’s storyline, the resulting show has the potential to be an excellent successor to the Dune franchise.

Netflix’s The World Jones Made Can Be The Dune Movies’ Perfect Followup

Netflix is creating a series called The Future Is Ours, based on Philip K. Dick’s novel The World Jones Made. While there’s no official release date yet, it’s expected to arrive around late 2026 or early 2027. Given the timing, following the release of Dune: Part Three, it could be a good follow-up for fans of that movie series.

Compared to many of his other works, Philip K. Dick’s The World Jones Made tells a more contained story, focusing primarily on human characters and not spanning multiple planets. Like Dune, however, it explores the burden of being able to foresee the future and the temptation of a messianic figure. Just as Paul Atreides in Dune does, Floyd Jones (who will be portrayed as Jonás Flores in the new series) develops the ability to “see” what’s to come.

Despite his ability to see the future, it ultimately brings Floyd more trouble than good, as the future is unchangeable. The novel The World Jones Made also challenges the idea of a “chosen one”—like the character Paul, Floyd begins as a simple fortune teller but eventually becomes a manipulative political leader.

Similar to the character of Paul, this figure is depicted as morally conflicted and troubled, rather than simply evil. However, his power ultimately contributes to humanity’s decline, as those who follow him lose their independence and become consumed by the false sense of security he offers.

The series The World Jones Made initially featured a storyline about an alien race called the Drifters. However, Netflix has decided to remove this element and focus the show entirely on events happening on Earth. Although some fans are worried about this change from the original story, there’s still optimism that the adaptation will be good.

I’m really excited about Netflix’s The Future is Ours, and if it delivers, I think it could be just as epic and captivating as the Dune movies. It really has that potential!

Will The Dune Franchise Continue After Dune: Part Three?

Denis Villeneuve is a highly acclaimed director known for his work across many different types of films. While the Dune movies are a significant part of his career, he’s planning to take on a new challenge after Dune: Part Three. Reports suggest he’ll be directing the next James Bond film, continuing the legendary spy series.

Despite finishing his work on the Dune series after the third film, Villeneuve has stated he’s open to someone else directing any future installments.

The source novels by Frank Herbert continue the story of Dune far beyond Dune: Messiah, with books like Children of Dune and God Emperor of Dune. Dune: Part Three will begin to lay the groundwork for adapting these later stories by featuring the twin children of Paul Atreides and Chani. The director has praised the remaining books as “beautiful” and has suggested that the upcoming Dune movie might start setting them up (according to Variety).

I’d like to ensure the ‘Messiah’ project contains elements that could inspire future adaptations, as the source material is rich and beautiful, even though it’s complex and can be challenging to adapt. I won’t be pursuing any further adaptations myself, but I’m open to the possibility of someone else taking it on.

With the Dune films being both critically acclaimed and financially successful, it’s probable that other filmmakers will take on the series after Denis Villeneuve. However, the future of the movie franchise is currently unclear beyond Dune: Part Three. Until then, fans looking for similar science fiction can check out Netflix’s adaptation of Philip K.
