HBO Max Officially Releases One Of 2026’s Best Horror Movies Next Month

One of A24’s creepiest releases of 2026 is coming to streaming.

As a total horror fan, I recently checked out Undertone, and it really got under my skin. It follows Evy, played by Nina Kiri, who’s a bit of a skeptic but hosts a podcast about the paranormal. She heads back home to look after her mom, and things get seriously creepy when she and her co-host, Justin (Adam DiMarco), start receiving these bizarre audio files. They come with a weird message, and honestly, they start to mess with Evy’s life, especially when she finds out she’s pregnant. It’s a slow burn, but definitely unsettling!

The audio recordings center on Mike and Jessa, a couple who believed their home was haunted by a demon while they were awaiting the birth of their first child. The recordings document frightening events, including Jessa seemingly singing nursery rhymes backwards in her sleep, and ultimately detail the terrifying ordeal they experienced with this unseen force.

This year, A24’s horror film, Undertone, quickly became a standout success, and now it’s coming to HBO Max. Starting June 25, 2026, you’ll be able to stream the suspenseful, sound-focused movie from the comfort of your home.

Ian Tuason’s directorial debut, Undertone, has become a significant hit this year. The horror film, made for just $500,000, earned around $22 million worldwide – more than 42 times its production cost. It’s quickly gaining recognition as one of the best horror movies released so far.

Tuason’s film, Undertone, draws heavily from his personal life, specifically his experiences caring for his parents as they fought cancer. What began as a radio play evolved into a full-length movie, with Tuason incorporating details from his own life into the story of the main character. To add to the film’s authenticity, he even filmed portions of Undertone in his childhood home.

Filming for the project happened in February 2025 in the Rexdale area of Toronto. Director Tuason built the story’s suspense through sound and subtle details, aiming for a creeping sense of dread instead of relying on jump scares or graphic visuals common in many horror films. He shared that Undertone focuses on creating tension through what the audience doesn’t see, and this approach proved to be very successful.

A24’s Undertone will be available to stream on HBO Max on June 26, 2026.
