The band Yes has changed significantly over the years. Sadly, bassist Chris Squire has passed away, and vocalist Jon Anderson left the group as a full-time member around the turn of the millennium. While guitarist Steve Howe remains, most of the current lineup joined in the mid-1990s or later.
Simply put, the band’s new album sounds different than it would have in the past. And that’s okay! Many bands change members over time and still create great music.
Yes’ new album, Aurora, is coming out on June 12th. It will be their 24th studio album overall. So far, they’ve released two singles from the album: “Aurora” and their newest song, “Turnaround Situation.”
“Turnaround Situation” by Yes is a mixed bag of fluff
It’s great that they’ve released a new song, but does it actually sound like a typical Yes track, and more importantly, is it any good? The answer is complicated – it’s both yes and no.
Fans of classic Yes will immediately recognize and appreciate the band’s signature sound. It’s clear from the start – especially with the prominent keyboards – that this isn’t a departure into country music, but a continuation of their progressive rock style.
The main problem lies with Davison’s singing. It’s not that he’s a bad vocalist, but on the song “Turnaround Situation,” his voice sounds overly polished and a little weak. Although he likely recorded in a professional studio, he sometimes struggles to hit the notes, and his performance occasionally sounds off-key.
The songwriting isn’t particularly original. It feels like Davison just combined a lot of familiar phrases and ideas without much thought.
The song also lacks the necessary weight or intensity. While it’s understood to be a lighter take on progressive rock, it feels more like a rejected song from a 1970s Broadway show, perhaps something that didn’t quite fit into the musical Pippin.
The song isn’t even bad enough to stick in your head. It’s just completely forgettable – you likely won’t remember it in a few months. Hopefully, the rest of the album is an improvement.
