Taylor Sheridan is working on a new TV series, and unlike his other shows, it isn’t connected to the world of Yellowstone. However, some recent changes during the show’s creation are echoing events that happened to the character John Dutton.
Sylvester Stallone leads the popular and critically praised TV show, Tulsa King. The crime comedy-drama follows a New York mobster who’s tasked with building a new criminal organization in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Due to its success over three seasons, a spinoff series is now in development.
Fans of Tulsa King have more to look forward to! Besides season 4 of that show, the new series Frisco King will be coming out soon. It takes place in the same world as Tulsa King and stars Samuel L. Jackson as a character first seen in season 3 – the man who tried to kill Sylvester Stallone’s character, Dwight Manfredi.
Okay, so this is a bit of a shakeup. Taylor Sheridan, the creative force behind shows like Yellowstone, has stepped in to directly oversee Frisco King. Apparently, the original developer, Dave Erickson – who was running things after Tulsa King – has left the project. It reminds me a lot of what happened before season three of Yellowstone started filming. It’s clear Sheridan is incredibly hands-on and wants total control over anything bearing his name, and he’s not afraid to make changes to ensure his vision is realized. He really takes ownership of these TV series.
Taylor Sheridan Has Taken Over The Writing Of Tulsa King’s Spinoff
The show previously called NOLA King has been completely reimagined, including a new title and storyline. Taylor Sheridan, the show’s creator, decided to move the setting from New Orleans to Frisco, Texas, which is close to where he lives and operates his production facilities near Fort Worth.
Okay, so Samuel L. Jackson is still the star, thankfully! But instead of the Louisiana bayou, this time around he’s playing a gangster who’s set up shop way up in Frisco, Texas – that’s part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, and not too far south of Oklahoma, if you’re keeping track. It’s a big change of scenery, to say the least!
Sheridan has really made this show his own by filming it in his hometown and using his SGS studios. Even more impressively, he wrote the entire first season of Frisco King himself.
Initially, the creator of Tulsa King was only going to oversee the show as an executive producer. However, he decided to get more involved when it became clear the original showrunner, Dave Erickson, couldn’t manage both this series and his work on Sheridan’s Mayor of Kingstown.
Sheridan didn’t simply continue the Frisco King project as Erickson had started it. He completely reimagined the series, setting it in a smaller town and a more familiar Western landscape, similar to shows like Landman and Dutton Ranch.
Frisco King’s Rewrite Repeats What Happened To Yellowstone Season 3
Taylor Sheridan took complete writing control of Frisco King season 1, hoping to make the show better, much like he did with season three of Yellowstone. He explained in 2025 that disagreements over the plot are what prompted him to step in and take over the writing process.
He said the scripts for Yellowstone season 3 were so flawed that actors were openly rebelling against the dialogue. Instead of trying to resolve the issues between the writers and the cast and crew, Sheridan took over writing the scripts himself for that season.
I was absolutely blown away to learn he single-handedly wrote all ten episodes of a season of Yellowstone! And get this – he did it in just three months, while also directing Those Who Wish Me Dead on location in Mexico! It really paid off, because that season is widely considered the show’s best, and amazingly, it still has a perfect 100% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s incredible to think about everything he accomplished during that time.
Taylor Sheridan is known for writing a lot of screenplays, and even for him, his speed is remarkable. He’s done it again, recently writing all eight episodes of Frisco King very quickly and on his own.
Up until July 2025, the pilot episode was being developed based on a script by Dave Erickson, as reported by Deadline. However, just over six months later, all of Erickson’s work was removed, and the show ended up with a new title and setting.
This sudden shift shows how quickly Taylor Sheridan operates. It also highlights his ability to firmly control any aspect of his television projects when he deems it necessary.
Taylor Sheridan Is Still In Full Control Of His TV Universe
Now that Taylor Sheridan has created a large and expanding television world, much bigger than the original Yellowstone, he can’t personally write or manage every show being made. In fact, some shows associated with his name he’s no longer actively involved in.
After developing the idea and first episode of Tulsa King, he let Terence Winter, who previously ran Boardwalk Empire, take over as showrunner. He also stepped back from Mayor of Kingstown after writing all of season one and the first episode of season two.

For the last year, Taylor Sheridan has given the creators of his Yellowstone spin-offs, Spencer Hudnut and Chad Feehan, full creative control over shows like Marshals and Dutton Ranch. He’s also adopted a more relaxed approach to his new Western series, The Madison, letting director Christina Alexandra Voros lead the day-to-day production on set – something he wouldn’t have done as often in the past.
Despite appearances, Taylor Sheridan still has complete control over his TV shows. The recent changes to Frisco King clearly demonstrate how quickly he’ll step in and reshape a project if it doesn’t meet his high expectations, and this could happen with any of his series.
