The Marvel Cinematic Universe completely redefined how adaptations are made. This interconnected series of live-action films brought Marvel Comics’ most famous heroes to life and has been the leading force in superhero movies for nearly two decades. While the MCU has created many fantastic films, its success has unfortunately meant some other great comic book movies haven’t received as much attention.
Animation is a great fit for superhero stories because it can create incredibly grand and imaginative worlds and characters. While some animated superhero films have become just as famous as live-action ones, many others haven’t received the recognition they deserve and have been largely forgotten.
Batman: Gotham Knight Is a Unique Anthology Connected to The Dark Knight Trilogy
Released between Batman Begins and the highly acclaimed The Dark Knight, the animated film Batman: Gotham Knight was initially planned as a series of stories taking place in the same world as Christopher Nolan’s movies. While Gotham Knight doesn’t perfectly align with the storyline or timeline of the Dark Knight Trilogy after those films were released, it’s still an enjoyable watch.
With a fresh take on Batman for today’s viewers, Batman: Gotham Knight uses different animation styles and character portrayals to show how various people in Gotham see the masked hero. It feels similar in spirit to the classic Batman: The Animated Series episode, “Legends of the Dark Knight.” This film is often overlooked and deserves to be rediscovered by Batman fans.
Ultimate Avengers: The Movie Is One of Marvel’s Earliest Animated Adaptations of The Earth’s Mightiest Heroes
Before the popular Marvel movies, the Avengers weren’t as well-known as teams like the X-Men. However, Marvel’s ‘Ultimate Universe’ helped boost their popularity. A comic series called ‘The Ultimates,’ which reimagined the Avengers, became very successful. It offered a fresh, modern take on classic characters, making it stand out from other superhero stories.
This explains why the series was adapted into the animated movie, Ultimate Avengers: The Movie. Released in 2006, the film skillfully combined the core stories from Marvel Comics with the reimagined ‘Ultimate’ universe. It shows how some of Marvel’s most famous heroes first got their start and how the Avengers team initially formed, long before their live-action movie debut.
While it doesn’t look as polished now, Ultimate Avengers: The Movie is still worth checking out if you’re interested in seeing what superhero team-up movies were like before the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths Is a Multiversal Delight Released Years Before Spider-Verse
Don’t mistake this film for the recent, poorly received Justice League Crisis on Infinite Earths series. The 2010 animated movie, Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths, introduces the Crime Syndicate – a villainous, alternate-universe version of the Justice League. They rule their world ruthlessly, and when the Justice League gets involved to try and defeat them, things quickly become chaotic.
Justice League stories are consistently enjoyable in animated form. While the Justice League and Justice League Unlimited TV shows remain the best adaptations of the team, other animated versions successfully capture what makes the League so appealing. The epic clashes – like Superman versus Ultraman, Wonder Woman versus Superwoman, and Batman versus Owlman – featured in Crisis on Two Earths are just a taste of what this film offers, and it’s a must-see for anyone interested in the team.
Superman/Batman: Public Enemies Is a Short and Sweet Action Bonanza
Based on the popular comic book story by Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness, the 2009 animated film Superman/Batman: Public Enemies is a surprisingly fun and often overlooked gem from DC. It’s packed with appearances from many of DC’s most famous heroes and villains, and features Superman and Batman as they are pursued by former friends and allies.
As a huge movie fan, I absolutely love Superman/Batman: Public Enemies. It’s a really fun, action-packed sci-fi film that perfectly captures the dynamic between Superman and Batman. They face off against a ton of villains – Metallo, Lex Luthor, and so many more – and the movie handles it all with a cool, effortless style. It came out during a golden age for DC animated movies, but even amongst all those great films, Public Enemies really shines. It’s a fantastic experience for anyone who loves comics, and it’s a perfect example of
Justice League: The New Frontier Is a Love Letter to the Source Material and Its Heroes
I truly believe Darwyn Cooke’s Justice League: The New Frontier is a stunning achievement. It’s beautifully designed and packed with thoughtful ideas, making it, in my opinion, the best animated movie released directly to DVD in two parts. It’s just a masterpiece!
Set throughout much of the 20th century, The New Frontier explores a world in transition, examining how people began to view heroism and following the stories of the heroes—including those who emerged from hardship—who teamed up with Wonder Woman to confront a frightening new alien invasion.
With beautiful animation, incredible voice performances, and truly well-developed heroes, Justice League: The New Frontier is a real gem. It’s unfortunate that it’s fallen into obscurity.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem Should Have Gotten So Much More Love
Despite being one of the best films of 2023, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem has surprisingly been overlooked since its release. This is a shame, because the movie is visually stunning, genuinely funny, full of exciting action, and features surprisingly heartfelt character development.
Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo feel more engaging, developed, and human than ever before, and Mutant Mayhem had the potential to launch a fantastic series of films. The animation is almost as impressive as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which is saying a lot.
With funny characters, a distinct visual style, and a strong personality, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is a truly excellent movie that deserves more attention.
