HBO’s 6-Part Controversial Series With 89% Returns as a Streaming Hit 9 Years Later

HBO is known for its hit shows that have helped launch the careers of many now-famous actors. Shows like The Wire, Boardwalk Empire, Sex and the City, and Euphoria have all turned lesser-known performers into stars. That trend continues with Girls, the often-discussed 2012 comedy-drama, which is now available to stream again, nine years after it originally ended.

According to FlixPatrol, Girls is currently the 7th most popular show on HBO Max in the U.S. It’s also performing well internationally, ranking as the 3rd most-watched show in Hungary and the 2nd in Australia. This success follows the release of creator Lena Dunham’s memoir, Famesick, which reveals behind-the-scenes stories from the making of Girls.

Girls Launched the Careers of Many Talented Stars

Lena Dunham, who also played Hannah Horvath—an aspiring writer in Brooklyn—on the show, became well-known for Girls. The HBO series was popular and won many awards, though it sometimes sparked debate. Following Girls, Dunham created the comedy Camping and the romantic comedy series Too Much.

Allison Williams, now well-known for her roles in horror films like Get Out, The Perfection, and M3GAN, also appeared in Girls. In the series, she played Marnie Michaels, Hannah’s somewhat self-absorbed and attention-seeking best friend and roommate.

Jemima Kirke played Jessa Johansson, a free-spirited and outspoken friend of Hannah, in the HBO series Girls. Zosia Mamet starred as Jessa’s cousin, Shoshanna Shapiro. Since Girls ended, Kirke has appeared in shows like Maniac, Sex Education, and Conversations with Friends. Mamet has gone on to star in The Flight Attendant and The Decameron.

Without question, Adam Driver’s performance as Adam Sackler on Girls was a major turning point for the actor. Sackler, a part-time carpenter and aspiring actor, had relationships with both Hannah and Jessa. Since his time on the show, Adam Driver has become a prominent Hollywood star, notably known for playing

A major focus of Lena Dunham’s new memoir is her complicated and reportedly difficult relationship with Adam Driver while working on Girls. Some believe the attention surrounding these stories, and the memoir as a whole, has led to a renewed interest in the show, bringing it back to streaming charts.

Girls Received Positive Reviews from Critics

Critics generally liked the HBO series Girls throughout its run. On Rotten Tomatoes, the show earned an 89% rating based on reviews from critics and a 76% rating from audiences. The first season was particularly well-received, achieving a 94% ‘Certified Fresh’ score from critics.

Given its strong cast and a story that people are still talking about nearly ten years later, it’s no surprise that Girls continues to attract viewers. Some are revisiting the series after hearing behind-the-scenes details from Famesick, while others are discovering it now because of the cast’s current success in other roles.

Girls is available to stream on HBO Max.
