The Last Of Us Has One Of HBO’s Best Casts

HBO is famous for discovering and casting incredibly talented actors. They made brilliant choices with James Gandolfini in The Sopranos, Michael K. Williams in The Wire, and Emilia Clarke in Game of Thrones. They also helped launch the careers of stars like Sydney Sweeney and Michael B. Jordan. Shows like The Sopranos, The Wire, The White Lotus, and Succession are full of amazing performers who consistently deliver captivating scenes.

Three years ago, HBO tried adapting a video game for television with its series based on the popular post-apocalyptic game, The Last of Us. Historically, movies and TV shows based on video games haven’t been very good, but The Last of Us, along with shows like Arcane and Fallout, seems to be changing that reputation.

Craig Mazin, known for Chernobyl, collaborated with Neil Druckmann, the creator of The Last of Us game, to create a very accurate adaptation – especially in its first season. When the show premiered in 2023, it quickly became popular with both critics and viewers. The writing was emotionally resonant, the visual effects vividly recreated the game’s post-apocalyptic world, and the use of flashbacks and side stories enriched the themes and expanded the overall story.

The cast is likely the biggest reason for The Last of Us‘s popularity. While viewers were initially drawn in by the action and dramatic setting, they truly connected with the emotional relationship between Joel and Ellie, who became like father and daughter to each other.

The Last Of Us’ Casting Team Found The Perfect Pair To Play Joel & Ellie

At the heart of The Last of Us is the powerful relationship between Joel, a hardened smuggler coping with loss, and Ellie, a 14-year-old who brings new hope to his life. A key reason the game resonated with so many players was the genuine emotional connection between Joel and Ellie, brought to life by the incredible chemistry between actors Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson.

Finding actors to play Joel and Ellie was a huge challenge for HBO. Unlike roles like Tony Soprano or Jimmy McNulty, which were original characters, Joel and Ellie were already well-known thanks to the incredible performances by the original actors who played them in the games. HBO needed to find new actors who could capture the same chemistry and feel without simply copying what Baker and Johnson had done.

Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey turned out to be an ideal match for the roles. While both actors bring a unique perspective – Pascal’s Joel is more emotionally open than the previous portrayal, and Ramsey’s Ellie is even more fiery and sarcastic – they successfully capture the essence of the original characters. Both Pascal and Ramsey are perfectly cast individually, but their incredible chemistry is what truly makes their relationship feel authentic, just like in the games.

Even The Last Of Us’ Guest Actors Are Incredible

The acting in The Last of Us is phenomenal across the board, not just from stars Pascal and Ramsey. Every actor, like Gabriel Luna as Tommy and Isabela Merced as Dina, delivers a standout performance that feels strong enough to carry their own show.

Kaitlyn Dever has given the controversial character Abby a surprising amount of depth, making her just as relatable as Laura Bailey originally did. Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett transformed a couple of smaller characters from the first game into a truly unforgettable love story. While it’s based on a video game, The Last of Us features some of the best acting you’ll find anywhere on TV.
