Photos from the set of Dexter: Resurrection reveal Dan Stevens, known for his role in Downton Abbey, as a new serial killer character. It was previously announced in April that Stevens would be a main cast member in the show’s second season, joining Brian Cox from Succession.
Both Stevens and Cox will portray serial killers in the show. Stevens will play The Five Borough Killer, a character who, similar to the Zodiac Killer, enjoys taunting the police with threatening phone calls about planned murders.
It adds: “When he follows through with the awful deeds… the city and the police are terrorised.”

I just saw some on-set photos of John Stevens as The Five Borough Killer, and he looks amazing! He’s wearing a blue hoodie, hat, and jeans, totally blending in while they filmed on the streets of New York City. It really gives you a feel for the character!
Okay, so we don’t know much about what’s happening in season 2 yet, but I just saw a picture of the actor on the phone wearing bright yellow gloves! It’s got me thinking… what kind of trouble is their character getting into this time? Seriously, those gloves just scream ‘something sneaky is going on!’

Compared to Stevens’ character, the villain Cox plays – Don Framt, aka The New York Ripper – isn’t actively killing anymore. Instead of continuing the murders, he’s found a way to stay infamous by just messing with the people he tried to kill years ago. He basically gets his kicks from taunting his survivors.

Dexter: Resurrection is the third series in the Dexter universe and picks up after the events of Dexter: New Blood. Following a confrontation with his son, Harrison, where Dexter was shot, he sets off for New York hoping to find redemption, but his past quickly resurfaces.
I’m so excited to hear Michael C. Hall is back as Dexter! And it’s great news that Uma Thurman is returning as Charley too. The first season had some amazing actors – seriously, Peter Dinklage from Game of Thrones, Eric Stonestreet of Modern Family, and even Neil Patrick Harris from How I Met Your Mother were all in it! It really made for a fantastic cast.

In October 2025, Michael C. Hall revealed that Dexter would return with a new season, simply stating, “the story continues” in a video posted to social media. He also expressed gratitude to viewers for watching the recent season, saying he hoped they enjoyed “taking the Dexter ride with us this summer.”
Dan Stevens first gained recognition for playing Matthew Crawley on Downton Abbey from 2010 to 2012, where his character tragically died in a car accident shortly after his son was born. Since then, he’s had a successful film career, appearing in movies like Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Cuckoo, and Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga.
Dexter: Resurrection season one streams on Paramount+.
