As a researcher tracking the crypto landscape, I’ve learned that WazirX, a major exchange in India, will be briefly pausing all crypto deposits and withdrawals. They’re planning to do this starting at 11:55 PM IST on May 21, 2026, and expect everything to be back to normal by 4:00 AM IST on May 22, 2026.
On May 20th, the exchange announced on X that its systems were temporarily unavailable due to planned maintenance.
What will be affected?
The platform will briefly pause only crypto deposits and withdrawals for maintenance. You’ll still be able to trade spot and futures, and all other platform features will remain online. Crypto deposits and withdrawals will be available again once maintenance is finished.
The exchange didn’t say why the maintenance was happening or which blockchains it would affect.
Not the first time
WazirX has experienced similar periods of downtime recently. For example, on March 19, 2026, the exchange underwent extensive scheduled maintenance from 11:55 PM to 4:00 AM IST. During this time, users couldn’t sign up, trade, deposit or withdraw either Indian Rupees or cryptocurrencies, or even cancel orders.
The maintenance last March caused significantly more problems than this one. Currently, only depositing and withdrawing cryptocurrency is affected.
On October 28th and 29th, 2024, WazirX performed scheduled maintenance from 10 PM to 3 AM IST to upgrade its systems. During this time, all services were temporarily unavailable.
The platform remained offline after a $234.9 million hack on July 18, 2024, and users strongly criticized the announcement about ongoing maintenance, wondering what exactly was still being maintained.
Prior to the security breach, WazirX conducted scheduled wallet updates in May 2022 for several cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Tron, Litecoin, Binance Chain, and Ripple. This temporarily paused withdrawals for all those currencies.
A busy period for WazirX
This maintenance is happening at a busy time for WazirX. Recently, on May 13, 2026, they introduced trading in Indian rupee-settled crypto futures with very competitive fees – 0.02% for makers and 0.04% for takers – making them one of the most affordable futures platforms in India. This launch is part of a larger effort to add new products, which began after the exchange resumed operations on October 24, 2025, following a successful restructuring approved by a Singapore court.
On May 7, 2026, WazirX launched its “Guardians of Trust” hub – a new section of their website designed to improve security, provide updates on their practices, and help investors learn more.
WazirX, along with ZebPay and Binance, was set to meet with India’s Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance on May 20, 2026. The discussion focused on virtual digital assets – like cryptocurrencies – and how to best regulate them in India.
WazirX receiving an invitation to contribute to policy discussions sparked debate within the crypto community. Many wondered why an exchange previously affected by a significant security breach was being asked for its input.
Users are increasingly concerned about WazirX’s deposit and withdrawal issues, especially since 15% of funds lost in the July 2024 hack remain inaccessible as Recovery Tokens. Adding to this, there’s been no announcement confirming the platform has met its $10 million profit goal needed to begin buying back tokens. This means users waiting to fully access their money are paying close attention to any further service interruptions.
Maintenance is expected to finish by 4:00 AM IST on May 22nd. WazirX hasn’t announced if there will be any more interruptions after that.
