Arnold Schwarzenegger’s King Conan Is Officially Moving Forward

Ever since Arnold Schwarzenegger first played Conan in two movies, fans have wanted him to return for a third film to complete the series. Now, after many years, it’s been announced that a third movie is finally in development.

Arnold Schwarzenegger recently told TheArnoldFans that filming for King Conan is scheduled to begin next year. This news comes after it was announced that the writer and director of several Mission: Impossible films will be working on the sequel for 20th Century Studios. Schwarzenegger also expressed his desire for John Milius, who directed the original Conan the Barbarian movie, to participate in the new film, with production now slated for 2027.

King Conan Starts Filming in 2027

Arnold Schwarzenegger announced that a new King Conan movie is officially in the works, and he’s thrilled about it. He’s been advocating for this project for a decade, emphasizing the need for a strong script and someone who truly understands the source material by Robert E. Howard and the art of Frank Frazetta. He hopes to have John Milius, who directed the original Conan film, involved as a producer, believing it will make the movie truly exceptional.

The actor explained that the delay in starting the project actually worked in its favor. Arnold Schwarzenegger, 78, noted that the story focuses on Conan facing challenges as an older, less physically powerful character. Had they made the movie sooner, they would have needed to rely heavily on aging makeup. But because enough time has passed since the original films, King Conan will feel much more authentic.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Is the Perfect Age to Film King Conan

The actor explained that a follow-up movie wouldn’t have felt right immediately after the first Conan film. The concept of King Conan relies on the fact that he’s been ruling for forty years and is now older, past his prime. He’s become a bit comfortable as king and is weary of the job, wanting to retire. He compared it to Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven, envisioning a similar tone but with larger-scale action sequences.

Released in 1982, Conan the Barbarian was a turning point for Arnold Schwarzenegger, helping him become a major Hollywood star. The film was so successful that a sequel, Conan the Destroyer, followed in 1984, again starring Schwarzenegger in the lead role. Over the years, plans for a third film were considered, and recently, a project for King Conan began to gain momentum, finally making real progress this year.

King Conan does not yet have a set release date.
