The critically acclaimed Irish film God’s Creatures, featuring Paul Mescal and Emily Watson, is now available to stream in the UK.

The 2022 film centers on Brian, played by Mescal, who returns to his small Irish fishing village after living in Australia. When he’s accused of sexual assault, his mother, Aileen (Watson), defends him, causing deep divisions within his family and the tight-knit community.

Paul Mescal gained significant attention for his role in the film, which was his first major movie appearance following his success in the TV series Normal People. Aftersun, co-directed by Saela Davis and Anna Rose Holmer, debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2022, alongside another of his films, God’s Creatures.

What did the critics say about God’s Creatures?

Critics generally liked God’s Creatures, and it currently has a 90% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 98 reviews. However, it’s not Paul Mescal’s most critically acclaimed film; All of Us Strangers, Aftersun, and The Lost Daughter have all received higher ratings.

In the film’s trailer, W Magazine is cited as calling it “an affecting, clear-eyed masterpiece“.

Empire Magazine noted that while the film is dark and subtle, its powerful acting and complex ethical dilemmas make it surprisingly impactful.

According to The Wrap, the film showcases impressive direction from Holmer and Davis, who expertly manage the mood, acting, and both the visual and sound elements. They bring their unique style to Shane Crowley’s tightly written and well-structured screenplay.
