Eurovision 2026 has a winner but the debate is only getting started

For those following Eurovision, Bulgarian singer Dara took home the win in 2026 with her song “Bangaranga.” It’s an energetic and cheerful track that matches Dara’s personality. However, many are now wondering if the song is genuinely a good one.

Eurovision is a lighthearted and hugely popular music competition, though it’s also launched the careers of some incredibly talented artists. For example, ABBA, Céline Dion, and Olivia Newton-John all gained recognition through the show, and it can certainly be a big boost for anyone’s music career.

As a huge fan, I was absolutely thrilled when Dara won for Bulgaria! It was their very first victory, which is incredible considering the competition began way back in 1956. Seriously, after 70 years, this small nation of about seven million people finally got the win they deserved – it was a truly historic moment!

Eurovision 2026 winner Dara’s “Bangaranga” is sugary sweet fluff

Okay, so the song… it’s a bit of a wild ride. At first, it’s alright, but around the 30-second mark, you’re either gonna LOVE it or absolutely hate it – it’s super catchy, but also potentially super annoying. Honestly, it feels a lot like most Eurovision winners: pure pop, with a great beat and some slick choreography. It’s not groundbreaking at the start, but it gets going!

Then the main part of the song begins, and Dara starts repeating “bangaranga,” a Jamaican phrase with many meanings. In this song, which is about a cheerful uprising, “bangaranga” likely means something like “joyful rebellion.”

It’s not the lyrics themselves that are the problem, but the way Dara sings the chorus – it sounds very mechanical. After that, the song feels repetitive and goes around in circles for over three minutes. The strongest part of the track – and this isn’t a criticism of Dara’s skills, she’s a good singer and the lyrics are meaningful – is the instrumental break just before the two-minute mark.

It’s easy to picture an industrial metal band taking this song and stripping away its pop elements, transforming it into something huge and powerful. Even the energetic, chaotic feel would fit, and a band like Static-X could add a much harsher edge to the vocals.

It’s interesting to consider what makes this song so popular with millions of listeners. The crowd gets incredibly excited during her performances, though the song itself doesn’t quite seem to deserve that level of reaction. Perhaps the strong bass line is what fuels their enthusiastic response.

Dara performed the song with a lot of charm and personality. She has potential to become a star, but it would be great if her success wasn’t solely based on this one song, “Bangaranga.” It feels a little too superficial to build a lasting career on. If “Bangaranga” represents the best Eurovision had to offer in 2026, the competition really needs to improve for 2027.
