Toy Story 5 confirms BBC radio favourites for special cameos in UK release

The next Toy Story movie, Toy Story 5, will feature two popular UK radio hosts lending their voices to the film. The story follows Woody and Buzz Lightyear as they face off against new, tech-focused threats to children.

Next month’s animated movie features BBC radio personalities Sian Welby and Jordan North voicing the characters of an Inflatable Flamingo and a Garden Gnome.

For the UK version of the movie, Welby and North will join the already impressive voice cast, including Tom Hanks and Tim Allen who are returning as Woody and Buzz. Joan Cusack is also back as Jessie, and Greta Lee joins the cast as Lilypad, a new frog-shaped tablet character.

Welby shared her excitement about joining the cast of Toy Story 5, saying that the Toy Story movies hold a special place in many childhoods—including her own—and being involved is a dream fulfilled.

North expressed how thrilled they are to be in Toy Story 5, calling it a dream come true. As a longtime fan of the movies, joining the cast feels incredibly surreal and meaningful.

What to Read Next

Last year, Andrew Stanton, the director of Toy Story 5 and a co-writer of the screenplay with Kenna Harris, responded to concerns raised about the series.

The writer-director clarified that fans can still enjoy the original trilogy whenever they want, even if they don’t want to see any further installments. He also explained to Empire magazine in November that he’s always appreciated how the world of Toy Story allows stories to evolve and change over time, and that the story doesn’t need to stay frozen in the past.

Stanton explained the basic idea for the next movie: it will explore how technology affects our daily lives, but won’t necessarily portray technology as the enemy.

You know, it’s not really about winning or losing in this game. It’s more like a weird, sad realization – it hit me that it feels like nobody actually plays with stuff anymore, like we’ve lost that part of being a kid.

Technology has dramatically impacted how we all live, and we’re starting to consider what that means for ourselves and, especially, for our children. Simply blaming technology for problems isn’t a helpful solution.

Toy Story 5 is released in cinemas on 19 June.
