Though best known as science fiction, Star Trek has often branched out into other genres. The Next Generation and Voyager occasionally featured horror elements, while season two of The Original Series frequently visited planets mirroring different eras of Earth’s past. Lower Decks embraced comedy, and Strange New Worlds even included a musical episode.
It’s difficult to find a bigger or more controversial change in direction for Star Trek than the one in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Although it still felt like a Star Trek show, the series fully embraced its concept as a college experience, becoming a teen drama complete with all the stress about school and clumsy romance you’d find in a Netflix teen rom-com.
Taking a hugely imaginative franchise like Star Trek and focusing it on typical high school experiences was a gamble, and many felt it didn’t pay off, even considering how much the franchise has grown recently. While critics generally liked Star Trek: Starfleet Academy (giving it an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), fans were much more split in their opinions. The fact that Paramount canceled the show—even though a full second season had already been filmed—speaks volumes about its performance.
What Starfleet Academy Got Right (It’s More Than You Think)
While Star Trek: Starfleet Academy took a different approach than other Star Trek shows and sparked some criticism, its first season had a lot of potential. The season-long storyline, involving Caleb Mir’s mother and the Venari Ral, included all the key elements of a strong modern Star Trek narrative: a captivating villain played by Paul Giamatti, a central mystery connected to a main character, a significant danger to the Federation, and complex moral questions. If the show had been a concise, four-episode miniseries focused solely on that initial plot, it likely wouldn’t have faced as much negative reaction, even with its focus on young college students.
The cast of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is a major strength of the show. Ethan Kraag delivered the most compelling Klingon character in years, the relationship between his character and Robert Picardo’s Doctor felt like a seamless continuation of Star Trek: Voyager, and the entire group was wonderfully grounded by Holly Hunter’s performance as Captain Ake – an unusual but engaging leader.
While Starfleet Academy might have strayed a bit from the original Star Trek, it was clearly created by fans who deeply respected the source material. This was especially evident in the episode focused on Benjamin Sisko – a fitting homage to a beloved character. Despite feeling a little like Saved by the Bell in space, the heart of Star Trek remained.
Star Trek Needs Another Genre Change In 2027
Unfortunately, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy didn’t attract a large enough audience to continue beyond its second season. Paramount has made the decision to end the show, even if the final episodes are well-received. Since season 2 is already completed, there won’t be a chance to change things based on what viewers think.
To keep things interesting and maybe even bring fans together, the next season of Starfleet Academy should try something new with its storytelling.
The best episodes of Starfleet Academy truly captured the spirit of Star Trek by showing us the galaxy through the eyes of a student, like in “Vox in Excelso” and “300th Night.” These felt like Star Trek, but with a fresh perspective. On the other hand, the weaker episodes felt generic – they could have been storylines from any teen drama of the last two decades, with only a superficial Star Trek theme, as seen in episodes like “Vitus Reflux” and “The Life of the Stars.”
It’s a delicate balance for Star Trek shows featuring younger characters – they need to feel like Star Trek episodes, not teen dramas simply using Star Trek faces. Starfleet Academy would benefit from leaning more into genuine Star Trek storylines, especially after the first season. While the show’s overall success might not change, improving in this area could give it a strong finish and leave fans wondering what could have been if it continued.
