HBO’s Game of Thrones proved that book adaptations could be hugely successful on TV. This paved the way for other streaming services like Netflix (Shadow and Bone) and Prime Video (The Wheel of Time) to create their own fantasy shows based on popular books. Although The Wheel of Time won’t be continuing, Prime Video is already preparing another exciting fantasy series.
Rebecca Yarros’s Empyrean series is a major hit in the fantasy book world. The first book, Fourth Wing, came out in 2023 and quickly became incredibly popular, largely due to its success on TikTok’s book community, BookTok. A television adaptation, produced by Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society, is planned for May 2026.
Fourth Wing Is Set to Be the TV Event of the Decade
The Empyrean book series has become a huge hit online, and the upcoming TV show is predicted to be one of the decade’s biggest. Details like the show’s name, who will star in it, and when it will be released are still scarce, but fans are already eagerly anticipating it. The first book, Fourth Wing, sold over two million copies within its first six months and has two follow-up novels planned.
Fans have been eagerly awaiting a TV series based on . However, the project faced several setbacks and changes in leadership, pushing back the start of filming. Now, Amazon Prime Video has officially approved the Fourth Wing series, and Lisa Joy, the executive producer of Westworld, will direct the first episode.
Following Moira Walley-Beckett’s exit, Meredith Averill is now leading the show alongside Rebecca Yarros. Averill has a strong background as a writer and co-showrunner on popular series like The Good Wife, Jane the Virgin, and The Haunting of Hill House. Given the talent involved, Fourth Wing has the potential to be a major hit in the fantasy genre.
What Is Fourth Wing About?
The story centers on Violet Sorrengai, a twenty-year-old who begins her training at Basgiath War College in Navarre. Students at the college specialize in one of four areas: Infantry, Healing, Writing, or Dragon Riding. Violet had always planned to become a scribe, following in her father’s footsteps, but her mother, General Lilith Sorrengail, insisted she try to become a dragon rider instead.
The Riders Quadrant is notoriously dangerous for those just starting out, and while most recruits spend years preparing, Violet only had six months of training. Fourth Wing tells the story of Violet as she faces life-threatening challenges and competitions, all while encountering Xaden Riorson, a powerful rider who is particularly unfriendly towards her.
After the success of Fourth Wing, Rebecca Yarros continued the story with Iron Flame in 2023, followed by Onyx Storm in 2025. The Empyrean series will eventually have five books, with two still to come. The books contain plenty of material for a potential, long-running television adaptation.
Fourth Wing Will Have a Lot of Competition
Lots of new fantasy TV shows are planned for release in the latter half of the 2020s. A highly anticipated one is the HBO Max series based on Harry Potter, scheduled to premiere on Christmas Day. However, this Harry Potter reboot and the Fourth Wing TV series will face competition from numerous other upcoming fantasy shows.
Mike Flanagan, the director behind popular horror series like The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, and The Fall of the House of Usher, is now working on The Dark Tower. While a movie version of The Dark Tower failed to succeed in theaters, Flanagan is planning a new adaptation as a TV series for Prime Video.
Tracy Deonn’s 2020 young adult fantasy novel, Legendborn, is being adapted for television. Additionally, Amazon Studios is developing a TV series based on Leigh Bardugo’s dark fantasy horror series, Ninth House, with Bardugo also serving as a producer. Bardugo is also known for writing the Shadow and Bone trilogy.
Fantasy is incredibly popular right now, with lots of new shows and adaptations of books in the works. Despite the competition, Fourth Wing looks set to be one of the decade’s biggest fantasy hits, building on the success of the books it’s based on.
