Be careful, this contains spoilers for the first two episodes of Dutton Ranch! The new series could reveal shocking truths about how John and Jamie Dutton died in Yellowstone. Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler’s move to South Texas is off to a rough start, as Beth immediately clashes with Beulah Jackson, the local equivalent of John Dutton.
The first episode of Dutton Ranch introduces Beth, who’s starting a business selling black angus beef. She tries to find a local place to process her cattle, but runs into trouble with Beulah Jackson, who owns the 10-Petals Ranch. The Jackson family has owned and run 10-Petals – the biggest ranch in Rio Paloma – for 190 years. Beth refused to pay Beulah’s high prices for slaughtering her cattle.
Beulah, much like John Dutton from Yellowstone, is a rancher carrying the weight of her family’s legacy while dealing with constant trouble. She’s struggling to cope with problems like her son Rob-Will’s drinking, her rebellious granddaughter Oreana, and even having to hide a murder on her ranch. She’s already pushed to her limit.
As a big fan of the show, I immediately understood Beulah Jackson’s wariness around Beth Dutton. She clearly recognizes Beth’s dangerous edge – that ‘gator in Gucci’ persona – and is actively investigating her. It’s a smart move, because Beth could potentially expose the Duttons’ deepest, most damaging secrets.
Beulah Jackson Investigates John & Jamie Dutton’s Deaths In Dutton Ranch
In the final moments of the second episode of Dutton Ranch, Beulah Jackson discovers news online about John Dutton’s murder and the disappearance of his son, Jamie. A headline in The Bozeman Examiner states: “GOV. JOHN DUTTON SLAIN; Son, Montana Attorney General James Dutton, Accused After Sister’s Attempted Murder — Now Missing.”
Beth Dutton’s family name preceded her when she arrived in South Texas, and locals, like Beulah, knew her as “the governor’s daughter.” However, Beulah’s knowledge comes from public reports: the death of Governor John Dutton, initially ruled a suicide, is now being investigated as a possible murder. At the same time, Jamie Dutton has disappeared after an attempt was made on his sister’s life.
John Dutton was actually murdered by hired guns working for Sarah Atwood. Jamie was wrongly connected to the crime. Following Atwood’s own death, Beth and Jamie had a brutal fight, and Jamie almost killed Beth before Rip intervened. Ultimately, Rip and Beth killed Jamie and secretly disposed of his body at the Train Station.
If Beulah Jackson investigates Beth and Rip closely, and has the means to do so – including help from her son and associate, Joaquin – she could reveal the truth about John and Jamie Dutton. This could expose the Dutton family’s most damaging secrets from the end of the Yellowstone series, and ultimately cause trouble for Beth and Rip.
Kayce Is Also Hiding The Truth About John & Jamie In Marshals
In Yellowstone, Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) is working to protect his family’s secrets surrounding the deaths of John and Jamie Dutton. The U.S. Marshals are also looking into the Duttons’ past, reminding viewers that the investigation into Governor Dutton’s death is still ongoing.
Kayce’s investigation into his father’s death revealed that John Dutton was actually murdered. He discovered that Sarah Atwood hired a secretive firm to carry out the hit. In the twelfth episode of Yellowstone season 5, titled “Counting Coup,” Kayce confronted Grant Horton (Matt Gerald), the mercenary who was paid to kill his father.
While the show hasn’t confirmed it directly, it seems likely Kayce is aware that Beth and Rip were responsible for Jamie’s disappearance and sent him away. Despite loving his brother, Kayce distanced himself from Jamie after learning about Jamie’s role in their father’s death, effectively leaving Jamie’s fate in Beth’s hands.
Even though Beth and Rip have left Montana in the world of Dutton Ranch, they can’t escape the troubling secrets of their family – specifically, the fact that they were responsible for the death of Jamie, who used to be the state’s attorney general.
It would be quite a twist if the new John Dutton at Dutton Ranch discovered the full story and then used that knowledge to turn against Beth and Rip.
