Mortal Kombat II is the box office champion of the franchise.
The new video game movie, Mortal Kombat II, continues the story from the 2021 film. Director Simon McQuoid returns with familiar actors like Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, and Hiroyuki Sanada. The cast also includes new faces such as Tati Gabrielle, Adeline Rudolph, Martyn Ford, and Karl Urban. Released on May 8, 2026, Mortal Kombat II had the biggest opening weekend of any Mortal Kombat movie, including the four previous theatrical films and five direct-to-video releases.
According to Variety, Mortal Kombat II is expected to make $12.7 million in the US and Canada this weekend. That’s a significant drop of 67% from its opening weekend, but it’s enough to bring the film’s total worldwide earnings above $84.4 million – surpassing the lifetime gross of the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie.
As a big movie fan, I’ve been following Mortal Kombat II, and even though it didn’t quite hit the initial box office predictions – it was about $20 million off – it’s already made $79.1 million worldwide. They’re now predicting it’ll reach around $91.8 million domestically. We won’t have the full international numbers until Sunday, but it’s looking very likely the film will pass the $100 million mark globally by Monday. It’s a great sign for the franchise!
Despite a difficult launch due to the pandemic and simultaneous release on HBO Max, 2021’s Mortal Kombat performed well. Now, Mortal Kombat II has earned more than $51.4 million, making it the second-highest-grossing film in the series (without considering inflation). While both the 2021 and 1997 films earned less than $110 million worldwide when adjusted for inflation, the new sequel is likely to surpass them soon, if it hasn’t already.
Here’s a look at how well the live-action Mortal Kombat movies have done at the box office.
| Title | Worldwide Box Office | Adjusted Box Office |
|---|---|---|
| Mortal Kombat (1995) | $122.2 million | $266.2 million |
| Mortal Kombat Annihilation (1997) | $51.4 million | $106 million |
| Mortal Kombat (2021) | $83.6 million | $104.25 million |
| Mortal Kombat II (2026) | $91.8 million (& counting) | N/A |
The new movie is on track to surpass all previous Mortal Kombat films at the box office except for the very first one from 1995, which Paul W. S. Anderson directed and starred Linden Ashby as Johnny Cage. It’s likely to exceed the original Mortal Kombat II‘s $122.2 million earnings soon, but matching its inflation-adjusted worldwide total of $266.2 million seems unlikely.
Even though it might not reach the top spot, the new movie performing as the second highest-grossing film in the series would still be a major success. This gives it a strong foundation to do well on its own. However, with a reported budget of $80 million, the movie needs to earn around $200 million in theaters just to break even.
Although Mortal Kombat II is performing well and could potentially reach a significant milestone, early numbers suggest it will likely only make a modest profit in cinemas. However, it’s expected to earn considerably more through streaming, on-demand viewing, television broadcasts, and physical copies like DVDs and Blu-rays.
