Theatergoers are madly in love with Obsession.
Curry Barker, known for the online comedy duo “that’s a bad idea” and his breakout 2024 horror short Milk & Serial (made for just $800), makes his feature film directorial debut with the new horror movie Obsession. The film, produced with support from Blumhouse Productions, centers on a young man (Michael Johnston) whose wish for his crush (Inde Navarrette) to reciprocate his feelings comes true – with unexpected consequences. Obsession has been a hit with both critics and audiences, earning a 94% rating on both Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer and Popcornmeter.
According to Variety, the movie Obsession is expected to make $14.5 million in North America during its opening weekend. While that’s not enough to reach the top two spots – The Devil Wears Prada 2 and Michael are still performing strongly – it’s a good result, significantly exceeding the predicted $9 to $10 million opening.
Okay, so I was looking into this new horror flick, Obsession, and it’s crazy! Apparently, it only cost about $1 million to make. Usually, a movie needs to make two and a half times its budget just to start turning a profit, which would put Obsession‘s break-even point around $2.5 million. But get this – it made over five times that amount in just one weekend! That means it’s already earned fourteen times what it cost to make. Seriously, that’s a huge success story for a low-budget horror film!
It’s still too early to tell how well the new Curry Barker movie will do overall. Horror films often earn most of their money in the first few weeks, with attendance dropping significantly – sometimes by 60% or more – after the opening weekend. But the incredibly positive reviews for this film, especially those for Obsession, suggest it could gain popularity through strong word-of-mouth and have a longer, more successful run, building on its already impressive start.
If Obsession performs like the successful horror films Weapons and Sinners from 2025, it could earn between $49 and $82 million in the U.S. Even if its performance declines quickly, the film has already established director Curry Barker as a reliable draw for audiences.
