Superhero films depend on strong lead characters, but sometimes supporting characters become more popular and outshine the heroes. This recently happened with James Gunn’s Superman movie, where audiences came to see Superman but ended up most excited about Mister Terrific. It’s not always other superheroes either; sometimes it’s just sidekicks who steal the spotlight.
Superheroes like Spider-Man, Iron Man, Superman, and Batman are incredibly popular, and it’s hard to imagine anyone replacing them. But surprisingly, even these iconic heroes have sometimes been overshadowed by the characters around them – their friends and allies have stolen the show on occasion.
Sometimes, a superhero’s sidekick becomes more popular than the hero themselves, eventually taking the lead in movies. We’ve seen this happen with characters like Shuri and Wong, who started as supporting characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and later became major heroes, even potentially replacing the originals. Whether they’re heroes like Mister Terrific or friends like Luis and Ned Leeds, memorable supporting characters always make a lasting impact.
Luis (Ant-Man)
The Ant-Man films were designed to be fun and action-packed, and Michael Pena brought the laughs as the character Luis. Luis became famous for telling incredibly detailed and rambling stories, which became a signature part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His quick-paced flashback scenes were so well-received that the filmmakers even used the same style in Ant-Man and the Wasp.
Luis quickly became a fan favorite in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and critics noted his absence in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania as a significant flaw. He proved so popular that Marvel made a series of recap videos featuring him, which became hugely popular online.
Katy (Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings)
Despite being critically acclaimed with a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 98% audience approval rating, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings hasn’t gotten a sequel in the five years since its release. The film follows Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, who fights against his father, the Mandarin, and his criminal group, the Ten Rings. Many viewers especially loved Awkwafina’s performance as Shang-Chi’s close friend, Katy, who often stole the scene.
Many viewers felt the dynamic between Shang-Chi and Katy was similar to the one between Ant-Man and Luis. Katy’s witty and funny personality provided a welcome contrast to the serious family problems Shang-Chi faced. She was a scene-stealer with her humor, and by the end of the film, she’d proven herself a capable fighter, showing she could handle any challenge.
Alfred Pennyworth (Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy)
Over the years, many characters have been part of the “Bat Family,” and we’ve seen several of them appear in Batman films. From the iconic movies directed by Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher, to the more recent takes by Christopher Nolan, Zack Snyder, and Matt Reeves, each generation of Batman movies features its own take on the character of Alfred. Most fans agree that Michael Caine’s portrayal of Alfred in Nolan’s Dark Knight films was the best.
Michael Caine’s portrayal of Alfred was the most proactive and involved in the story compared to any other actor who played the role, even those in subsequent films. He had memorable lines, most famously, “Some men just want to watch the world burn.” Beyond that, he uniquely served as Bruce Wayne’s voice of reason when things spiraled out of control. His wish for Batman to find happiness and settle down with a wife provided a fitting conclusion to the entire film series.
Yondu (Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2)
In the first Guardians of the Galaxy film, Yondu and his Ravagers started as enemies but ultimately assisted Star-Lord and his friends. But in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Yondu’s role became much more significant. While not officially a Guardian himself, his personal story was arguably the most important in the sequel, second only to Star-Lord’s, and he ultimately became the most compelling character.
Yondu’s desire to earn back the Ravagers’ respect was just as crucial to the story as Peter Quill (Star-Lord) discovering the truth about his father and mother. He also delivered some of the most memorable lines, like his hilarious “I’m Mary Poppins, y’all,” which quickly became a popular internet joke. The moment he revealed Ego was Star-Lord’s father, but emphasized he wasn’t a father figure, was one of the most emotionally powerful scenes in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Happy Hogan (Iron Man)
I’ve always loved Jon Favreau’s work on the first two Iron Man films, and it’s awesome he wasn’t just the director – he was in them too! He played Happy Hogan, Tony Stark’s right-hand man and head of security, and really brought that character to life. It’s incredible to think he’s been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for so long, appearing in eight movies total – even the new Deadpool & Wolverine! It’s a testament to his dedication and how much fans love his portrayal.
I always loved Happy Hogan! He was such a great character, and it was awesome to see him get more to do outside of the Iron Man films. His role in the Spider-Man movies, being the guy tasked with looking out for Peter, was perfect. Remember that scene where he was struggling with one bad guy while Black Widow took out a whole crew? That was hilarious! And honestly, seeing him try to protect Ned and MJ in Spider-Man: Far From Home really showed why everyone loves Happy so much – he’s just a good guy trying to do his best.
Korg (Thor: Ragnarok)
Taika Waititi followed a similar path to Jon Favreau by directing several films and also appearing in them as a memorable character. Favreau became known for playing Happy Hogan in the Iron Man movies, while Waititi voiced the character of Korg in Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love & Thunder. Originally intended as a small role, Korg became more prominent thanks to his comedic timing and a request from Chris Hemsworth to include him in more scenes.
Waititi received nominations for MTV and Teen Choice awards, both recognizing his memorable performance as Korg. The character proved so popular that Korg returned in both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, even sharing a humorous scene with Thor that became a popular internet meme within the game Fortnite.
Shuri (Black Panther)
Shuri, played by Letitia Wright, first appeared in Black Panther as a supporting character whose main job was to create the technology her brother, T’Challa, used as a superhero. But she quickly became a fan favorite, often outshining even Chadwick Boseman in their scenes together.
Black Panther was a critical success within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, earning a 96% approval rating. Many critics highlighted Shuri as a potential new star for Marvel, and her strong presence in every scene proved valuable when she stepped into the leading role following Chadwick Boseman’s untimely death.
Wong (Doctor Strange)
When bringing the character Wong from Marvel Comics to the big screen, the Marvel Cinematic Universe made significant changes. In the comics, Wong was primarily Doctor Strange’s assistant and butler, but the movies portrayed him as an equally skilled magic user. He even briefly became the Sorcerer Supreme when Doctor Strange disappeared, and continued in that role even after Strange’s return, making him a much more important figure.
Benedict Wong’s character, Wong, had a much larger role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and many viewers felt he was the true hero of the film. He continued to shine in the Disney+ series She-Hulk, consistently stealing scenes, particularly when paired with the fan-favorite character Madisynn King (played by Patty Guggenheim). Their chemistry was so strong that many fans expressed interest in seeing a show centered around the two of them.
Ned Leeds (Spider-Man Franchise)
Ned Leeds, in the Spider-Man films, plays a similar role to Luis in the Ant-Man movies, but with more responsibility. Both characters are close friends with the heroes and know their secret identities. While Luis frequently assisted Ant-Man during missions, Ned positioned himself as Spider-Man’s main support, providing guidance and direction from behind the scenes.
Honestly, when Ned found out Peter was Spider-Man and accidentally smashed his LEGO Death Star, it was such a perfect moment – seriously, a highlight of Spider-Man: Homecoming! Everyone agreed Jacob Batalon was amazing in that movie, and he just kept getting better and better in the next two Spider-Man films. Ned quickly became the best sidekick in the whole MCU, and I’m really going to miss him when Spider-Man: Brand New Day comes out.
Mister Terrific (Superman)
James Gunn’s new Superman movie, which kicks off the DCU, features a team of unconventional heroes known as the Justice Gang. Although Superman and Lex Luthor were expected to be the main focus, Edi Gathegi’s portrayal of Mister Terrific quickly became a standout performance, even overshadowing the film’s leads. While Nathan Fillion was well-received as the cocky Guy Gardner, it was Gathegi’s Mister Terrific who truly captivated audiences.
Mister Terrific’s impressive beach fight against Lex Luthor’s henchmen, using only his T-Spheres, demonstrated his incredible abilities. Critics loved the movie and especially praised Michael Gathegi’s performance as Mister Terrific, with some even calling him the best part of the film. This led James Gunn to think about creating a spin-off series focused on the character. No matter what the future holds, Mister Terrific was a standout in Superman and is likely to return in future projects.
