Sketch comedy has a long and hilarious history, dating back to the vaudeville era over a century ago. Many comedy legends, like Charlie Chaplin and Kristen Wiig, began their careers performing sketches, and groups like The Lonely Island are famous for their incredibly funny short pieces. There’s a whole world dedicated to learning and teaching sketch comedy, and while many performers remain unknown, they all contribute to an art form that looks simple but is surprisingly challenging.
Though sketch comedy originated in live theater, most people know it through television. Almost as soon as TV was invented, shows featuring short, funny skits began to appear, with The Milton Berle Show in 1948 widely considered the first of its kind. Since then, countless sketch comedy shows have aired, and many have had a lasting impact, continuing to inspire comedians and actors today to pack as much humor as possible into just a few minutes.
Your Shows Of Shows
Though The Milton Berle Show premiered a couple of years earlier, Your Show of Shows truly defined sketch comedy as we know it on television. The show, featuring Sid Caesar, Imogene Coca, Carl Reiner, and Howard Morris, boasted a writing team that included future Hollywood legends. With contributions from writers like Mel Brooks and Neil Simon, the series was destined for classic status.
The real key to the success of Your Show of Shows was its director, Max Liebman, who preferred a spontaneous approach. Because the show was broadcast live without cue cards or TelePrompters, the actors had to be completely memorized each day. Your Show of Shows ultimately set the standard and inspired every sketch comedy show that came after it.
The Carol Burnett Show
A common rule in sketch comedy is that performers shouldn’t laugh or react to the humor happening on stage. However, The Carol Burnett Show famously broke this rule â and turned it into something special. They were so good at making each other laugh that it actually changed the rule, suggesting that if a comedy group can be as hilarious as Burnettâs team, then letting the laughter show is perfectly acceptable.
Carol Burnett, alongside comedic greats Harvey Korman, Vicki Lawrence, and Tim Conway, created a show that felt like a cozy get-together with friends, even while the audience was roaring with laughter. This unique, intimate atmosphere made viewers feel included in the sketches, and it also explained why the cast often broke character â everyone watching was laughing right along with them.
Monty Python’s Flying Circus
Widely considered the most intelligent sketch comedy group of all time, Monty Python’s Flying Circus was made up of graduates from Oxford, Cambridge, and Occidental College who used their education for hilariously absurd purposes. Featuring Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin, with animation by Terry Gilliam, Monty Python produced only 45 episodes, but revolutionized sketch comedy as we know it.
Monty Python’s quirky and fast-paced comedy didn’t appeal to everyone, especially older audiences, but it really resonated with young people in Britain during the early 1970s. They also found success in America, even though some of their British-style jokes weren’t always fully understood. It’s hard to define Monty Python’s humor as one specific thing, because each member of the group brought a unique comedic approach.
Saturday Night Live
Since it first appeared in 1975, people have been saying that Saturday Night Live isn’t as good as it once was â even after just the second episode! For over 50 years, SNL has been the leading sketch comedy show for every generation, from Baby Boomers to Gen Z, and now it’s reaching a new audience with Gen Alpha as they become teenagers.
I’ve been watching SNL for years, and it’s amazing to see how much it’s changed. It started as this really edgy, groundbreaking show with a cast they called the “Not Ready for Prime-Time Players,” but now it feels like a permanent part of television â I can’t picture a time without it. Think about all the incredible comedians who got their start there, from John Belushi to Sarah Sherman and so many others. Lorne Michaels really created something special, a true comedy factory!
SCTV
SCTV revolutionized sketch comedy by adding a continuous storyline. The show launched the careers of comedy legends like John Candy, Joe Flaherty, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Rick Moranis, Catherine O’Hara, and Martin Short. It was set within a made-up television network where the sketches were presented as actual programs the station broadcast. Alongside these shows, the series humorously depicted the behind-the-scenes antics and ‘drama’ of the network, led by its eccentric president, Guy Caballero. From parodies of soap operas and kidsâ programs to spoofs of everything youâd see on television, SCTV did it all brilliantly.
Over six seasons, SCTV gave us hilarious and memorable characters like Bob and Doug McKenzie, Count Floyd, Johnny LaRue, Edith Prickely, and the iconic Ed Grimley. While Saturday Night Live was the popular choice for most comedy fans, SCTV had a devoted following among those ‘in the know’.
The Kids In The Hall
No comedy show understood Generation X quite like The Kids in the Hall. Running for five seasons, the series blended the clever, unusual humor of Monty Python with the Canadian comedic style of SCTV, and then added a heavy dose of sarcasm and a sense of suburban disillusionment. This unique combination created some of the most memorable and wildly funny sketches ever. Plus, each performer brought their own distinct personality and style to the show.
Scott Thompsonâs Buddy Cole routines quickly became beloved, and Mark McKinneyâs Headcrusher and Chicken Lady characters achieved iconic status. Dave Foley and Kevin McDonald showcased their comedic chemistry with characters like the Sizzler Sisters and Simon and Hecubus. Bruce McCulloch masterfully balanced relatable, everyday humor with characters like The Eradicator and his surreal short film parody, âLove and Sausages.â In 2022, The Kids in the Hall returned to television for a final season, proving they hadn’t lost their comedic edge.
In Living Color
Created by Keenen Ivory Wayans and featuring his incredibly gifted family, In Living Color was an early success for the Fox network. It brought a fresh, energetic style to sketch comedy that Saturday Night Live didn’t have at the time. The show uniquely blended sketch comedy with hip-hop music and wasn’t afraid to push boundaries with its humor â even as future stars like Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, and Chris Farley were becoming part of the SNL cast.
While Saturday Night Live overlooked them, In Living Color launched the careers of Tommy Davidson, David Alan Grier, Jamie Foxx, and the Wayans family. However, Jim Carrey experienced the greatest breakthrough, becoming a global superstar thanks to the show.
Mr. Show With Bob And David
The year the comedy troupe The Kids in the Hall finished their run, a new sketch comedy show called Mr. Show with Bob and David debuted on HBO. Starring Bob Odenkirk and David Cross, Mr. Show took the lead in Gen X comedy, pushing boundaries and tackling subjects that most shows avoided.
Instead of building stories around the same characters week after week, like many sketch comedies, Mr. Show constantly introduced fresh, original ideas. While Bob Odenkirk and David Cross were the main performers, the show benefited greatly from the incredible comedic talents of performers who would later become famous, such as Paul F. Tompkins, Sarah Silverman, Jack Black, and Tom Kenny. Mr. Show wasnât afraid to be outrageous and even a little shocking, and its fans appreciated its willingness to push boundaries.
Chappelle’s Show
Despite only running for less than 30 episodes, Chappelle’s Show is considered one of the most influential sketch comedy series of the 2000s. Blending Dave Chappelleâs stand-up routines with pre-recorded sketches, the show cleverly tackled important and often controversial topics like harmful stereotypes, race, and drug use. Remarkably, it even captured the national mood surrounding the possibility of a Black president, anticipating reactions before Barack Obama became a household name.
Perhaps the most iconic part of Chappelle’s Show was “Charlie Murphy’s True Hollywood Stories.” In these segments, Charlie Murphy, Eddie Murphyâs brother, shared hilarious and unbelievable stories about his experiences with music legends like Rick James and Prince. The show not only made Dave Chappelle a huge star, but it also fearlessly broke boundaries in sketch comedy like never before.
Key & Peel
About ten years after Chappelle’s Show went off the air, Key & Peele emerged with a similar knack for capturing current events while also appealing to fans of 1980s pop culture. The show is best known for its hilarious portrayals of Barack Obama and Luther, and its memorable Gremlins 2 sketchâwhich led many to rediscover that film. Key & Peele stood out from other sketch comedies by exploring different genres, including horrorâa field Jordan Peele would later excel inâand showcasing Keegan-Michael Keyâs talent for exaggerated comedic performances.
As a huge comedy fan, I still think about Key & Peele all the time. Even though it only ran for three seasons, it gave us so many unforgettable sketches. Honestly, it feels like it paved the way for shows like Black Lady Sketch Show and I Think You Should Leave. Key and Peele have both done amazing things since then, but a lot of us are still hoping they’ll team up again someday!
