It looks like Disney+ has a surprising new success! The Korean romantic comedy-drama Perfect Crown is becoming a global phenomenon, racking up over 43 million hours of viewing time on Disney+ and Hulu, according to Disney’s data.
Disney reports that the series Perfect Crown has steadily gained viewers each week since its debut. The eighth episode attracted 43% more views in its first week than the premiere, which was already Disney’s most successful Korean series launch ever. This makes Perfect Crown the most popular Korean drama ever on Disney+ and Hulu, globally.
In just over four weeks, Perfect Crown has quickly become popular around the world. It’s the most-watched Korean show in the United States and Canada, and it’s also topping charts in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. This includes being the #1 Korean show in countries like Germany, Spain, the UK, Italy, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, and Japan.
According to Prefect Crown’s latest data from Flix Patrol, the show is currently the fifth most popular series on Disney+ globally, and it’s the top show in multiple countries.
What Is Perfect Crown About?
In a modern-day South Korea ruled by a king, Perfect Crown tells the story of Seong Hui-Ju, the ambitious and intelligent daughter of a powerful business family. Though she has a privileged life, her non-royal background creates problems when she falls for Prince I-An, the reserved second son of the King. I-An, defined by his royal title, is a man who keeps to himself, but Hui-Ju’s presence begins to draw him out of his shell.
Yoo Ji-won wrote the series Perfect Crown, while Park Joon-hwa and Bae Hee-young directed it. The show features IU, Byeon Woo-seok, Noh Sang-hyun, and Gong Seung-yeon as main cast members.
What Have Critics Said About Perfect Crown?
Despite its popularity worldwide, Perfect Crown has received mixed reviews from critics. A common complaint is that the plot feels familiar and follows a predictable formula. For example, a review in Decider praised the chemistry between the lead actors, IU and Byeon Woo-seok, but wished the first episode had moved more quickly and offered a less predictable storyline. They noted the premise was solid, but the overall story felt like something viewers had seen many times before in K-dramas.
The Korea Herald noted that Perfect Crown is currently a bit inconsistent. Since it’s only been airing for a week as a 12-episode series, it’s still developing. The review suggests the initial rocky start might be due to quickly introducing the characters, and the show has the potential to improve as the season progresses.
