As a huge Marvel fan, it’s been amazing watching The Punisher’s journey over the last ten years. I first met Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle back in season two of Daredevil, and then really got to know him through his own Netflix series. For me, he was always driven by one thing: getting revenge for his family. But honestly, Marvel Studios just completely flipped the script with The Punisher: One Last Kill. This special feels like a total game-changer and has fundamentally altered who Frank Castle is, at least as far as the MCU is concerned.
The recent comic arc, The Punisher: One Last Kill, has significantly improved Frank Castle’s story within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Instead of repeating familiar patterns, it allows Castle to fully embrace his identity as The Punisher, which is a very promising sign for his upcoming movie appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day later this year.
Honestly, while things are where they are, I’m really excited about where this could take The Punisher. It feels like Marvel is using this current storyline, One Last Kill, as a way to see how fans react to the changes they’ve made with Frank, and I’m hoping they’ll build something really interesting from it, moving beyond the Brand New Day era.
The MCU Has Rewritten The Punisher With One Last Kill, And I Couldn’t Be Happier
At the start of The Punisher: One Last Kill, Frank Castle has accomplished his mission: he’s killed everyone responsible for the deaths of his family. He recently eliminated the entire Gnucci Crime Family, except for Ma Gnucci (Judith Light). Seeking revenge for her husband and sons, she puts a price on Frank’s head.
In the dangerous neighborhood of Little Sicily, Frank has a chance to eliminate Ma Gnucci during a violent confrontation. However, he unexpectedly chooses to save an innocent family, letting Ma escape. This moment demonstrates a change in Frank’s focus within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He’s moved beyond simply seeking revenge for his own losses and is now focused on punishing criminals broadly, as shown in the conclusion of One Last Kill. He continues to deliver his brutal form of justice, but now prioritizes protecting the innocent.
The Punisher, Frank Castle, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is now focused on stopping others from experiencing the pain he felt after losing his family. This is a change from his usual story, especially since most of the people responsible for his family’s deaths have already been brought to justice. After a decade, his fight against crime in the MCU has grown much bigger than just personal revenge.
How One Last Kill Sets Up Punisher’s Role In Spider-Man: Brand New Day (And Beyond)
It’s also interesting to consider how Frank Castle’s recent developments clarify his appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. With his reasons for fighting crime now broader after the events of One Last Kill, it’s more likely he’ll cross paths with other heroes and vigilantes in New York. We actually see this happen in the first trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, where Frank literally crashes into Peter Parker with his armored van during a chase.
It will be really interesting to see how the Punisher’s story unfolds in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, especially considering what happened in One Last Kill. I’m hoping this is just the start of Frank Castle having a bigger role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Considering everything, bringing the Punisher into the main MCU opens up exciting possibilities. He could team up with other heroes, appear in standalone stories, or even get his own Disney+ series, similar to the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again. One Last Kill definitely feels like a test run for that future, demonstrating that Jon Bernthal’s Punisher has a lot more story to offer beyond his initial appearance in Brand New Day.
Marvel Studios’ The Punisher: One Last Kill is now available to stream on Disney+. And, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, a new film from Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios, hits theaters on July 31st.
