This month, PlayStation Plus added a lot of new games to its Game Catalog, including the popular Red Dead Redemption 2. But the most interesting addition is a classic game from the past. While only Premium subscribers can access these PS Plus Classics, they’re a major benefit for dedicated fans.
The Classics catalog has recently added some great titles, like the original Ridge Racer and Wild Arms 4. While not everything added is a universally beloved classic – Wall-E is a fantastic movie, but its tie-in game wasn’t as groundbreaking – this month’s addition feels more like those highly-regarded titles. It’s a standout release, similar in quality to Ridge Racer, rather than the more ordinary Wall-E game.
The classic arcade game Time Crisis is coming to PlayStation Plus Classics on May 19th, according to a recent post on the official PlayStation Blog. Originally popular in arcades, Time Crisis became a household name when it was released for the original PlayStation with a special light gun controller.
While it’s not exactly like using a traditional light gun, the PlayStation Plus Classics version now supports the gyro controller, letting you aim using motion. The announcement also hints at other new features, but doesn’t share specifics about what those might be.
While the PlayStation version of Time Crisis isn’t exactly the same as the arcade game, that’s not a drawback. It loses the gun’s kickback effect, but adds new stages that continue the story after the main game. Because Time Crisis was originally made for arcades, it’s a fairly short game, so these extra levels are a welcome addition.
Light gun games are often limited to the systems they were originally made for because it’s difficult to adapt them to newer consoles. Modern TVs don’t work well with the technology behind light guns, and the Wii was likely the last mainstream console to offer a similar experience using its motion-based pointer system.
Even though it’s not perfect, modern controllers with motion sensors allow for a basic way to play games designed for them, and it’s great to see PlayStation utilize this with a welcome surprise. Time Crisis is a beloved game both in arcades and on PlayStation, making it an ideal title to be reintroduced through the PlayStation Plus library.
