Good Omens Season 3’s Second Coming Explained & Why Aziraphale Wants To Change It

Warning: spoilers for Good Omens season 3.

Staying true to the show’s style, the third and final season of Good Omens focuses on a major religious event – the Second Coming – but with a twist. After the events of season 2 left Crowley (David Tennant) on Earth and Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) in Heaven, season 3 picks up with them a few years later. Currently, Crowley is living a rough life in an alley, passing the time with gambling and drinking, while Aziraphale is busy with his work in Heaven.

The next major event planned in Heaven is the Second Coming, as revealed by Metatron (Derek Jacobi) when Aziraphale took on a new job at the end of the last season. Aziraphale has been diligently preparing for it, but things get complicated when Jesus (Bilal Hasna) unexpectedly leaves Heaven. Adding to the chaos, the Book of Life is stolen, and archangels start vanishing. Once again, Crowley and Aziraphale join forces to investigate and recover it.

Crowley and Aziraphale discover that the theft of the Book of Life and the events surrounding the Second Coming are linked, putting the entire universe at risk of total destruction. True to the spirit of Good Omens, the Second Coming doesn’t unfold as traditionally depicted in the Bible, but retains its core meaning—presented with the show’s signature quirky style.

The Biblical Second Coming Explained

In Christianity, the Second Coming refers to the belief that Jesus Christ will return to Earth after ascending to Heaven. This return is expected to be a glorious event where Jesus fulfills ancient prophecies, judges all people, and establishes God’s kingdom. Unlike his birth, the Second Coming is believed to be visible to everyone. Similarly, in Islam, the Second Coming is considered a significant sign that the Day of Judgment is near.

No one knows exactly when the Second Coming will happen, though many faiths believe certain events – such as wars, natural disasters, and widespread hunger – could signal its approach. Regardless, followers are typically encouraged to always be prepared. Importantly, the Second Coming isn’t seen as the end of people, but rather the end of the present world and the beginning of a new one.

Many people mix up the Second Coming and the Rapture, but they’re actually distinct events. The Rapture involves Jesus returning to gather his followers, while the Second Coming is when he returns to Earth to overcome evil and create a new kingdom.

Why Aziraphale Wanted To Change The Second Coming

At the end of Good Omens season 2, Metatron announced preparations for the Second Coming, which surprised Aziraphale. This was the first indication that the angel didn’t fully agree with Heaven’s plans. Fortunately, Aziraphale received a promotion in Heaven that gave him some control over decisions, including the return of Jesus.

Aziraphale hopes to make the Second Coming a positive experience, not an end to the world. He wants it to be a happy occasion and even collaborated with angels to plan how Jesus would appear – specifically, arriving on a plane and addressing the world at the United Nations.

Jesus unexpectedly leaves Heaven, sending Aziraphale, angels, and demons on a chase after him. He wanders to the former location of Aziraphale’s bookshop and shares his message of love, hope, and forgiveness with anyone who will listen—and he treats them to pizza! This doesn’t unfold as Aziraphale envisioned, and the entire Second Coming takes an unpredictable turn.

Michael’s Plan For The Second Coming Explained

Archangel Michael, played by Doon Mackichan, is surprisingly old-fashioned in their approach, but goes overboard with it. Despite collaborating with Aziraphale on the plans for the Second Coming and organizing Jesus’ arrival, Michael had a completely separate agenda, and crucially, needed the Book of Life to carry it out.

Michael is the one who steals the Book of Life and begins removing names from it, starting with Metatron. When Crowley and Aziraphale confront her at the center of the universe, she explains that the Second Coming must happen according to the original plan, not the way Aziraphale hopes, and that she believes she’s the only one who can ensure it happens, using the Book of Life.

Aziraphale almost manages to talk Michael out of it, but the archangel stays firm and destroys the rest of the Book of Life with the Eternal Flame. Crowley manages to save the page detailing the bookshop, and he and Aziraphale head there – it’s now the only place left in the universe, and they seem to be the only ones who survived, aside from Satan and God.

Does The Second Coming Actually Happen in Good Omens Season 3?

Unlike the traditional story, the Second Coming in Good Omens season 3 doesn’t unfold as the Bible describes, nor does it happen according to Aziraphale and Michael’s plans. However, it does eventually occur. Jesus shares his message, but only with a select group, effectively completing his new purpose on Earth, albeit on a much smaller scale. He doesn’t create a new kingdom because Michael destroys him and the Book of Life.

Season 3 of Good Omens depicts the end of an era, but also the potential destruction of everything. Ultimately, Aziraphale and Crowley persuade God to create a new universe free from the concepts of good and evil, Heaven, Hell, angels, and demons, allowing humanity and Earth to simply exist and evolve naturally.

Despite the fact that it meant the original Aziraphale and Crowley would no longer exist, a new universe was created where human versions of them – Anthony Crowley and Asa Fell – could meet, fall in love, and enjoy a lasting, happy relationship. In essence, the events of the Second Coming were crucial for them to find their happy ending in Good Omens, even if it wasn’t as the angelic and demonic beings they once were.
