revolutionized the world of streaming television. Following a hugely popular launch in January 2025, it came back a year later with another outstanding season.
Noah Wyle, star of the Emmy-winning series, announced at Warner Bros. Discovery’s presentation that filming for a new season will begin shortly. This timing suggests the show will likely be released in early 2027, continuing a trend of successful releases for the streaming service. However, Wyle also revealed that the new season will differ from previous ones in terms of when it’s set.
The Pitt Season 3 Won’t Cover a Major Holiday
According to Wyle, production on Season 3 is beginning soon. He shared that the season will be set in early November, right before the holidays, and will introduce a fresh wave of crises, conflicts, and challenges.
The actor didn’t say specifically which holidays he meant, but it’s likely either Veterans Day (November 11th) or Thanksgiving (November 26th). He seems to be talking about the holiday season in general, meaning the new season will arrive before then.
Veterans Day could be a fitting time for this storyline, given the show has often featured veterans, including through characters like Dr. Jack Abbot (played by Shawn Hatosy) and Dr. Robby’s friend, Duke Ekins.
This medical drama follows the doctors and nurses working in the emergency room of the made-up Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. Each episode focuses on the challenges they face during a demanding 15-hour shift, including limited staff, budget cuts, and their own personal lives. The first season took place during Labor Day week in early September, and the second season was set over the Fourth of July weekend.
John Wells, the executive producer and director, has announced that filming will resume in June, with the show expected to return to television the week of January with 15 new episodes.
The Pitt Won’t Get a Spinoff Soon
Honestly, given how many shows milk their success with spin-offs and sequels, I’m surprised we haven’t seen one from this series yet. They’ve already got a goldmine idea simmering – a show focused on the night shift! Fans have been clamoring for it since the very first season. The main show mostly follows the daytime team, but the night shift crew has popped up throughout, and they’re clearly popular enough to carry their own story. It feels like a natural next step, and one I’d definitely tune in to.
Noah Wyle recently discussed the possibility of a revival, saying while anything could happen, it’s unlikely. The actor is also an executive producer on the show.
The show’s creator, R. Scott Gemmill, enjoys exploring the contrast between the day and night shifts. While viewers won’t see more of the night shift team, a character is moving to the day shift: Ayesha Harris, who plays Dr. Ellis, has been promoted to a series regular and will now be working daytime hours.
The Pitt will return in early 2027 on HBO and HBO Max.
