The new show, NCIS: Origins, initially planned a romantic storyline between Gibbs (Austin Stowell) and Lala (Mariel Molino), but ultimately decided against it to stay true to the established history of the main NCIS character. This prequel focuses on the early life of Leroy Jethro Gibbs, a central figure in the franchise. Gibbs was the heart of NCIS for many years, until Mark Harmon left in Season 19, and NCIS: Origins is now revisiting and expanding on his backstory.
Despite some initial dips in viewership, the prequel series found success on streaming platforms with NCIS. The season one finale created buzz, leaving viewers questioning the fate of Lala Dominguez. The season two premiere of NCIS: Origins revealed that Lala survived, but her return complicated her relationship with Leroy, following a familiar pattern for fans of the NCIS franchise.
NCIS: Origins Season 2 Showed More of Gibbs’ Romance With Diane
This season of NCIS: Origins hinted at a romance developing between Gibbs and Lala as they dealt with the difficult aftermath of Pedro Hernandez (played by George Paez) being murdered. However, at the same time, Gibbs was also seeing Diane (Kathleen Kenny).
The original series, spanning over twenty years, established Diane, portrayed by Melinda McGraw, as Gibbs’ second wife. Following appearances in the show’s finale and premiere, a younger version of Diane reappeared in the episode “Who by Fire.”
Viewers of the original NCIS have been aware of Gibbs’s second wife for some time, and NCIS: Origins introduced a younger Diane Sterling in its first season. Staying true to the established storyline, young Diane – a real estate agent who handled the sale of Gibbs’s family home – appeared in the season finale. The original series never fully explained…
Gibbs and Diane’s relationship isn’t helping those who hope to see him pursue a connection with Dominguez. Just before Gibbs confessed he’d turned himself in, he and Lala nearly kissed by the pool, which stopped the moment and led Lala to try and help him.
If Lala hadn’t crashed her Jeep on the way to Gibbs’ house, things might have turned out differently. Instead, Gibbs ended up meeting Diane, and their relationship quickly blossomed in Season 2 of NCIS: Origins.
Diane’s return to the show highlighted the growing connection between her and Gibbs. She played a significant role in the episode “Who by Fire,” pushing Gibbs to be more proactive in his career and take the lead in interrogations. The episode also revealed that Sterling had been a crucial support for Gibbs, both professionally at NIS and personally, following the loss of Shannon and Kelly.
This episode highlighted Diane’s kindness and how much she supports Gibbs, making viewers root for their relationship. However, it also made it harder to hope for a romance between Gibbs and Lala, as Diane is clearly a good influence on him. The episode demonstrated that Diane is the supportive partner Gibbs needs, encouraging him to grow. Their strong connection has made a potential relationship with Lala seem less likely, especially now that we know more about Gibbs’s second wife.
What Gibbs and Diane’s Romance Meant for NCIS: Origins Season 2
The romance between Gibbs and Diane in the NCIS: Origins prequel quickly overshadowed the budding connection between Leroy and Lala. Although some feelings remain between the agents – with Randy and Mary Jo suggesting Gibbs dated Diane out of fear of loss – the show established that Diane is a true match for Gibbs. This development, however, left little opportunity for a romance to develop between Gibbs and Lala.
If Gibbs and Diane were to hit a rough patch in their relationship, it could create an opportunity for the other agents to explore their feelings. However, after seeing their romance unfold, viewers might not actually want that to happen. While both Lala and Diane had an impact on Gibbs, as shown in NCIS: Origins, Diane is more of a supportive figure. There’s still a possibility of a twist regarding the show’s timeline, potentially weaving the romantic storyline hinted at in NCIS: Origins into the present events.
I was so happy when Gibbs and Diane got married, but it was sad to hear they eventually divorced after moving to DC. It makes me wonder about the future of the show. Unless NCIS: Origins decides to follow Gibbs to Washington as he climbs the ranks, I think characters like Lala and all the others we love will probably move on by the time Gibbs is single again.
Viewers are already aware that Gibbs was married before, and his wife wasn’t Lala. While the new show, NCIS: Origins, might try to make Gibbs and Lala’s relationship feel believable, it doesn’t seem likely at this point.
