Jude Law’s Star Wars Show Deserves A Sequel More Than Any Other In The Franchise

The 2020s have seen a major shift for Star Wars, with TV shows taking center stage. With fewer theatrical releases from Lucasfilm and Disney, television series have become the primary way Star Wars tells its stories, starting with the popular show The Mandalorian. While The Mandalorian was a hit with both fans and critics, particularly in its first two seasons, not all Star Wars series have been equally well-received.

Viewers generally disliked The Book of Boba Fett, the second live-action Star Wars series, criticizing its uninspired story and visuals. Later in 2022, Obi-Wan Kenobi was released with a lot of hype, but it also disappointed many fans.

I was so thrilled with Andor! It was the third live-action Star Wars series released that year, and honestly, the reviews were fantastic. It’s really stuck with me – many people now consider it one of the best shows of the 21st century, and I totally agree! It just goes to show that while Star Wars has given us a lot of different shows over the years, the quality has been pretty varied, but Andor really hit the mark.

In the current landscape of television, one Star Wars show often gets lost in the shuffle: Skeleton Crew. This 2024 series offered a fun, Gooniesinspired adventure in the Star Wars galaxy. While it didn’t rely on familiar faces like The Mandalorian, or feature the high-stakes drama of Andor or Obi-Wan Kenobi, Skeleton Crew was a significant success and arguably deserves a second season more than any other Star Wars* show currently available.

Skeleton Crew’s Original Story Excels

Unlike other Star Wars stories, Skeleton Crew doesn’t rely on familiar characters – except for a few minor pirates seen in season 3 of The Mandalorian. The show centers around a group of young children living on the secluded planet of At-Attin. Through an accident, they end up venturing into the wider galaxy and must find a way to return home.

The story centers on the planet At-Attin, where a group of kids are searching for a galactic map to guide them home. While the plot is straightforward, it’s very effective, bringing to mind classic adventures like Pirates of the Caribbean and The Goonies. It feels like a thrilling treasure hunt, filled with pirates and peril, but set in outer space.

What really set Skeleton Crew apart in the Star Wars universe was its originality. While Star Wars stories have always drawn inspiration from elsewhere – like the films of Akira Kurosawa – it hadn’t really explored the pirate genre in such a significant way before. This made Skeleton Crew stand out from other shows being released at the time, and it was a refreshing change.

The characters were a major strength. They’re mostly all original, which is refreshing when so many stories these days are prequels focusing on characters we already know, like in Obi-Wan Kenobi and Andor. Plus, the fact that they’re all children sets this show apart. Even though Grogu is a child character, the kids in Skeleton Crew are much younger and less developed, making their journey feel unique.

There’s Plenty Of Room For A Sequel

The first season of Skeleton Crew concluded with the planet At-Attin being revealed to the wider galaxy. This means the planet is no longer hidden, and while it will likely attract new dangers, it will also connect the people of At-Attin with the rest of the galactic community, ending their isolation. The season finale intentionally sets up plenty of possibilities for future storylines.

Jude Law’s character, Jod Na Nawood, could play a significant role if there’s a second season. He initially pretends to be a Jedi, leading the children to believe he’s a hero, but it’s later revealed he has a complex past. He betrays them in an attempt to steal the planet’s treasure, though he doesn’t succeed. While he fails, Jod does show some redemption, leaving the possibility for his story to continue.

Despite betraying them, Jod isn’t entirely a villain, leaving room for more story in Skeleton Crew, both for the children and for his character. With Jude Law as a major draw, the show could attract a consistent audience on Disney+, potentially encouraging Lucasfilm to continue the series.

Season 2 Can Tie Into Other Shows In This Era

The second season of Skeleton Crew could follow a similar path as The Mandalorian. The first season of The Mandalorian mainly focused on Din Djarin and Grogu as a standalone story, but the second season expanded the universe by introducing characters like Luke Skywalker and Boba Fett. Essentially, the first season laid the groundwork, introducing the characters and setting the stage for their involvement in a larger galactic story.

Like its first season, Skeleton Crew prioritized character development, much like The Mandalorian focused on Din Djarin and Grogu. This approach allowed characters like Jod to become fully realized and complex, ultimately leading to a role in another upcoming Star Wars series. Because of this strong foundation, a potential second season of Skeleton Crew could easily connect to the wider Star Wars galaxy.

The newest installment, The Mandalorian and Grogu, arrives in theaters soon, and Skeleton Crew could connect directly to its story, as well as the upcoming second season of Ahsoka. That season will focus on the larger events of this time period, including Thrawn’s efforts to revive the Empire. With the planet At-Attin now linked to the New Republic, Skeleton Crew could play a key role in the overall Star Wars narrative.
