The world of digital media is changing again, as media executive Byron Allen is buying a majority stake in BuzzFeed. Allen’s company, Allen Family Digital, will pay $120 million for 52% ownership of the online publisher, according to Variety. With this deal, Allen will become Chairman and CEO of BuzzFeed, marking the end of an almost 20-year run for co-founder Jonah Peretti, who has led the company since it started in 2006.
BuzzFeed has secured a $120 million investment to help stabilize its finances. The company recently reported it was running low on cash and facing potential removal from the Nasdaq stock exchange. The investment includes $20 million in immediate cash and a $100 million loan. This deal values BuzzFeed at a much higher price than its recent market value of around $30 million. Once the deal is finalized this month, BuzzFeed’s CEO, Jonah Peretti, will take on a new role as President of BuzzFeed AI.
With Peretti now leading the way, BuzzFeed will keep experimenting with using artificial intelligence in its content. At the same time, the new CEO, Allen, is focused on expanding into the competitive streaming market. He plans to turn BuzzFeed and HuffPost into large platforms offering free streaming videos, podcasts, and content created by users, aiming to challenge major players in the online streaming world.
This purchase marks another significant step in Allen’s expanding business. As leader of Allen Media Group, he already manages a variety of TV networks, local stations, and online platforms, such as The Weather Channel.
Byron Allen’s acquisition of BuzzFeed signals the end of its days as a scrappy, independent startup and the beginning of a new phase centered on streaming and content created using artificial intelligence. With digital publishing facing ongoing economic challenges, many will be watching to see if Allen’s experience with traditional broadcasting can revive this well-known internet brand.
