The popular online word game Wordle is becoming a TV game show! NBC announced it will adapt the puzzle – which became a viral sensation in 2021 and is now owned by The New York Times – for primetime television. The show, planned for a 2027 debut, will recreate the game’s familiar green and yellow squares in a fast-paced format, hoping to capture the same sense of community that made the online version so popular.
NBC is teaming up with a talented group of creators to adapt the popular word game into a show. Jimmy Fallon’s production company, Electric Hot Dog (known for shows like Password and That’s My Jam), is working on the project with Universal Television and The New York Times. Savannah Guthrie, co-host of Today, will host the show. According to The New York Times executive Caitlin Roper, Guthrie was chosen because she’s a dedicated Wordle player and very skilled at the game.
The popular word game will still challenge players to guess a five-letter word in six tries, but the TV show version will add a competitive team aspect. Instead of playing alone, dedicated Wordle fans will compete in teams against each other in a dedicated arena.
According to a recent announcement from The New York Times, the new show takes the popular daily Wordle experience – where people solve the puzzle together, share their results, discuss strategies, and support each other – and turns it into a competitive game show with the chance to win significant prizes. The show maintains the fun of solving the puzzle while adding a group dynamic and high stakes.
What started as a basic online game created by Josh Wardle has unexpectedly grown into much more – including a Hasbro board game, a virtual reality app, and now a television show. While production is beginning later this year, fans won’t be able to watch the show until 2027 to see if their skills at the daily puzzle will translate to success on television.
