4 Years After HBO Cancellation, Westworld Is Coming Back (But With a Twist)

Four years after it finished airing on HBO, Warner Bros. is bringing back the popular show, but not as another season of the TV series. Instead, they’re making a movie based on the story.

A new movie remake of Westworld is in the works, according to reports. The screenplay will be written by David Koepp, known for his work on Jurassic Park and its sequels. Interestingly, Michael Crichton, the author of the Jurassic Park novels, originally wrote and directed the first Westworld film, which later inspired the HBO series. This project follows Koepp’s recent work on Jurassic World: Rebirth and an upcoming sci-fi film directed by Steven Spielberg, set to be released next month.

Westworld Is Getting an All-New Feature Film

You know, before Westworld became the awesome HBO series we all know, it actually started as a movie way back in 1973! It was a really cool concept for its time – this futuristic amusement park filled with incredibly realistic androids that, well, start going haywire. Yul Brynner was fantastic as the Gunslinger, one of those androids, and the movie also starred Richard Benjamin, James Brolin, Linda Gaye Scott, and Dick Van Patten. It was a hit back then and it’s still a really beloved cult classic, and honestly, it’s fascinating to see where the show got its start!

The movie Futureworld, a sequel to Westworld, came out in 1976. Directed by Richard T. Heffron and written by Mayo Simon and George Schenck, it starred Peter Fonda and Blythe Danner, with a cameo appearance by Yul Brynner. The story centers on two reporters who discover a plot by the Delos corporation – the company behind both Westworld and Futureworld – to control the world.

The first attempt to turn Westworld into a TV series, called Beyond Westworld, appeared on CBS in 1980. However, it was short-lived, lasting only five episodes. The show centered on a Delos Corporation employee (played by Jim McMullan) who tried to prevent the company from misusing the robots in the park.

HBO’s Westworld Was Axed After 4 Seasons

I was really excited when HBO’s Westworld came out in 2016, and it definitely made a splash! Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, who are now doing Fallout, created it, and they drew inspiration from both the original Westworld movie and its sequel, Futureworld. The first season was completely contained within the Westworld park itself, but things quickly expanded – the show started exploring other parks and eventually even jumped into the futuristic real world in the seasons that followed.

When the show first launched, it was a massive hit, becoming the most-watched first season of any original series on the network. But by its fourth season, viewership had dropped by more than 80%. Although plans existed to create a fifth and final season, HBO decided to cancel the show due to its falling ratings and negative reviews. Soon after, HBO removed the entire series from its streaming service, HBO Max.

The Westworld reboot film does not yet have an official release date.
