Bob Weir, guitarist and one of the founding members of the Grateful Dead, has passed away at 78 years old, according to a statement posted on his Instagram account.
Weir died peacefully with loved ones nearby after a battle with cancer and complications from lung problems.
We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Bobby Weir. He passed away peacefully with family by his side. While he successfully fought cancer, he ultimately passed away due to complications from existing lung problems.
Oh, Bobby… he wasn’t just a musician, he changed everything. Seriously, American music would be so different without him. And it wasn’t just about the songs, though they were incredible. It was… a feeling. Like being wrapped in warm sunshine, you know? He created this whole world, a community of us who just got it. It’s like he gave us a shared language, a feeling of belonging, and honestly, I think generations of us fans will carry that with us forever. He wasn’t just heard, he was felt.
Honestly, his music just lived. Every single note and lyric wasn’t just sound, it built these incredible worlds. And it wasn’t just about listening, it felt like he was personally inviting you to really feel something, to think for yourself, to get lost in the music, and somehow, to feel like you were part of it all. It was magical, truly.
Last summer, Weir received a cancer diagnosis just before performing a series of concerts at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park.
He discovered his passion for music at age 16 when he stumbled upon a music store in Palo Alto. Drawn in by the sound of a banjo, he met Jerry Garcia, who was playing inside, and that encounter sparked his musical path.
They spent the entire night jamming together, which led to the creation of The Grateful Dead. Joining them were Ron ‘Pigpen’ McKernan, Phil Lesh, and Bill Kreutzmann, completing the band’s original five members.
