These days, with so many shows ending abruptly or leaving storylines unfinished, it’s rare to see a series fully wrap up its story. This is especially true for mysteries, where viewers expect answers to their questions and a resolution to the central plot. While a satisfying conclusion is always appreciated, it’s particularly crucial for shows built around complex puzzles and ongoing secrets, as those shows intentionally keep audiences guessing until the very end.
Shows like Lost became popular because fans actively discussed and theorized about the show online, trying to solve its mysteries. But captivating, puzzling stories have always been a hit with audiences – The Twilight Zone famously presented weekly riddles, carefully planting clues and hints before each surprising ending. Now, new mysteries are appearing that try to combine the intriguing puzzles of The Twilight Zone with the atmospheric feel of Lost. Among all of these, one show particularly stands out as a worthy successor: Manifest.
Originally created for NBC, Manifest told the story of passengers on a flight that mysteriously landed over five years after it took off. The survivors had a hard time adjusting to life, dealing with lost relationships, missed events, new technology, and strange, intuitive feelings called “callings.” Though NBC canceled the show after three seasons, it became very popular on streaming platforms, leading Netflix to revive it for one last season. This made Manifest one of the few shows saved by Netflix, and there’s even a possibility the story isn’t completely finished.
Manifest May Not Be Completely Finished In 2026
There Is Still Much Left To Explore In The Manifest Universe
The final episodes of Manifest were released in mid-2023, and fans are still debating them today. However, the show largely wrapped up its four-season mystery, resolving romantic storylines, tying up loose ends from previous seasons, and giving most of the main characters satisfying, though not always perfect, conclusions. It’s clear the central story of Manifest has come to an end. Despite this, the people involved have deliberately hinted at the possibility of future stories within the same universe.
After Manifest ended, its creator, Jeff Rake, hinted at a possible spin-off or sequel, but plans never solidified. More recently, actress Melissa Roxburgh suggested a return for the show around 2026. Now, with Rake having just released a novel called Detour—which takes place in the same world as Manifest—it seems likely he could turn the book into a sequel or connect it to the original series in some way.
Wherever the story of Detour goes, it’s likely to find viewers. The original show, Manifest, wasn’t a hit with critics and its ratings declined over time. What really kept it going wasn’t its promise, but the passionate fans who refused to let it end. They essentially saved Manifest, and it’s reasonable to believe they could make a sequel series successful too, though any follow-up would have a lot to live up to.
Manifest Was The Best Of TV’s Lost-Inspired Mystery Shows
Many Puzzle Box Shows Tried, But Few Stuck The Landing
There’s no question that Lost was a groundbreaking show. Given its massive audience and how it changed the way fans interacted with television, it’s easy to see why it influenced so many other series—from the psychological thriller Yellowjackets to the horror show From. Many shows have tried and failed to replicate Lost‘s success, but Manifest managed to stand out. Instead of simply copying Lost, it built its own compelling mythology that became richer as the series progressed.
Like Lost before it, Manifest wasn’t flawless, but it improved as it went along and didn’t shy away from fixing its mistakes. The intriguing premise – passengers returning without having aged, and the mysterious ‘callings’ they experienced – immediately grabbed viewers. The show built a complex mystery that really needed a good conclusion, and thankfully, Netflix delivered. Now, Manifest offers a complete and very satisfying experience for a weekend binge.
