Prime Video’s Reacher is a standout action series, and fans and critics agree it’s a very true adaptation of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher novels. Unlike the previous movies starring Tom Cruise, which were often criticized for deviating from the book character, Alan Ritchson is ideal in the role of the strong and towering former military police officer. All three seasons have received excellent reviews, boasting a 96% positive score on Rotten Tomatoes, thanks to one key change in how the story was brought to life.
Many popular TV action heroes are incredibly skilled and charismatic, often cracking jokes and displaying expertise in various areas. But the Jack Reacher character in the books is different – he’s a man of few words who primarily relies on his incredible strength and instincts. While the books frequently show us what Reacher is thinking even when he remains silent, translating that to a TV show presents a unique challenge.
Prime Video’s Reacher Couldn’t Have A Silent Protagonist Like In The Books
Showing what a character is thinking works well in books, but it can be tricky to adapt for television. Shows like Sherlock used visuals and on-screen text to illustrate Sherlock Holmes’s thought process, and Dexter employed narration. However, those techniques wouldn’t have suited a fast-paced, action-packed series. That’s why the TV adaptation of Jack Reacher differed significantly from the books.
Alan Ritchson’s portrayal of Reacher isn’t as reserved as the character is in the novels. The show relies more on him talking through his thoughts and bouncing ideas off other characters, rather than silently observing everything. This change was intentional, allowing the series to build his personality in a new way and give him a bit of a playful side. Though the show isn’t a comedy, Reacher occasionally delivers a witty line.
Because the show dedicates each season to a single book, viewers really get to understand the main character, something that might not have happened if the series had tried to cover more material quickly or if Reacher hadn’t spoken much. The strongest episodes, however, are clever and include both the intense action the books are known for and nods to the original stories – a prime example is the episode titled “Reacher said nothing” from the first season.
The Reacher TV Show Knows When To Make Its Character “Say Nothing”
Alan Ritchson’s portrayal of Jack Reacher speaks more than the character does in the books, but he’s still a man of few words. The show frequently follows Lee Child’s rule of having Reacher remain silent, and these moments are powerfully effective. The opening scene is a great example – it’s both humorous and perfectly introduces Reacher’s character. We see him confront someone committing domestic abuse, and the abuser immediately backs down and apologizes, simply because Reacher silently stares him down – he doesn’t need to say anything at all.
The show successfully mixes necessary conversations with staying true to Jack Reacher’s personality from the books. By using dialogue sparingly, the moments when Reacher doesn’t speak become much more powerful. While it’s impossible to overlook the 6’5” Reacher, his quiet, almost hidden, approach – especially in seasons 1 and 3 – reveals a surprising new side to the character, even for those who know the books well.
| The three seasons of Reacher | |||
|---|---|---|---|
| Season | Year | Rotten Tomatoes Critics’ Rating | Rotten Tomatoes Audience Rating |
| 1 | 2022 | 92% | 91% |
| 2 | 2023 | 98% | 77% |
| 3 | 2025 | 98% | 73% |
It’s challenging for any actor to express complex feelings without speaking, but Alan Ritchson excels at it as Reacher, and the show smartly gives him room to do so with minimal dialogue. This strong performance sets Reacher apart from typical action series and makes it a standout success for Prime Video, consistently improving with each season. Ritchson will get to further demonstrate his talent in season 4, which promises to be the most emotionally intense yet, forcing Reacher to react to disturbing events largely through nonverbal cues.
