This animated series has become incredibly popular over the last ten years, gaining fans all over the world with each new season. It centers on Mark Grayson, who grapples with the implications of being an alien and living in the shadow of his famous father. The story is about Mark finding himself and ultimately becoming the hero he’s meant to be.
Mark Grayson’s journey as Invincible introduces us to a memorable cast of characters – from love interests and rivals to those who guide him. While there’s often debate about what defines a ‘good’ female character, that discussion can be too limiting. What truly makes a character compelling is having believable reasons for their actions, a distinct personality, an interesting story, and solid writing. When these elements come together, a character can become truly exceptional, and the animated Invincible series showcases several examples of this.
Season four of Invincible took some interesting turns. A major storyline followed Damien Darkblood, a demon detective, as he investigated the deaths of the Guardians of the Globe and revealed important information about Omni-Man’s role in the events.
Volcanikka was a dangerous villain who lived underground and commanded the Magmanites, creatures previously seen with Doc Seismic. Both Volcanikka and Doc Seismic returned in the fourth season’s episode “Hurm,” continuing the story after Cecil Steadman banished Volcanikka back to Hell. The character was originally a male hero named Shriking Ray in the comics, and he died battling the Lizard League. The TV show has already made a significant change by reimagining the character as female and altering their fate, leaving their future open-ended. Although the Invincible series generally follows the comic book’s plot, it’s also introducing some differences, one of which is the handling of Shrinking Rae’s storyline.
I was so relieved to see Shrinking Ray survive the battle with the Lizard League! In the books, she doesn’t make it, so it was a big change. She was pretty banged up, but thankfully she pulled through. After recovering, she decided to hang up her shrinking ray and retire from being a hero. It was also really sweet to learn she and Rex Splode got close and even dated for a little while before he… well, before his tragic end. It added a lot of depth to her character.
I’ve noticed Amber Bennett feels a little… familiar in Invincible, both in the comic and the animated series. When she first appeared, she seemed like a classic girlfriend character – you know, the kind of role like Mary Jane Watson or Lois Lane often play. She definitely fit some common tropes at the beginning.
Amber often feels like an outsider, which creates both conflict and opportunities for her to develop as a character. However, she challenges the typical “outsider girlfriend” stereotype. Both Amber and Mark honestly grapple with the emotional distance caused by Mark’s life.
Their relationship helped them both grow, but by the end of the second season, they realized they were better suited as friends, even though they deeply cared for each other.
As a comic book adaptation, Invincible really nails something a lot of shows get wrong: it knows when to stick to the source material and when to change things up. For the most part, it’s incredibly faithful, but it doesn’t shy away from making smart adjustments where they actually improve the story.
In the original comics, Telia was simply Allen the Alien’s girlfriend and didn’t play a major role in the story. But the animated version of Telia is a much more important character: she’s a skilled pilot and a high-ranking official within the Coalition of Planets, voiced by Tatiana Maslany, known for her work in science fiction.
When the CoP needed a ship, Telia immediately stepped up to captain the *Star Treklike vessel, the Venture, as the previous captain wasn’t prepared. She’s also become Allen the Alien’s closest advisor since he became Chancellor after Thaedus passed away.
Dupli-Kate has the incredible ability to create perfect copies of herself, and she’s fully aware of everything each copy experiences. Combining this power with her martial arts training, she’s a highly effective crime fighter.
Kate has the unique ability to create copies of herself, which effectively makes her incredibly difficult to defeat, even in the most dangerous battles. She’s been a long-time friend and ally of Mark, initially fighting with the Teen Team before becoming a member of the New Guardians. In the second season, she faced a life-threatening situation while battling the Lizard League.
Despite experiencing a mysterious copy of herself, she ultimately left the superhero life after being deeply affected by repeatedly facing death. Through the character of Kate, Invincible delves into a side of having superpowers that isn’t often examined.
These creatures are incredibly powerful and tough, and they live for fighting. Because of this, they’ve developed a fanatical culture centered around conquest, constantly seeking to demonstrate their overwhelming strength.
Anissa is a Viltrumite introduced in the second season, sent to Earth to challenge Mark’s fighting skills. While she hasn’t had a major role yet, Anissa is one of the few Viltrumites developed as a character, offering viewers a glimpse into the culture and typical characteristics of Mark’s people.
Comic book readers already have a sense of what’s ahead, but watching Anissa develop throughout the series will be really rewarding.
The writer of Invincible has created many characters over time, including several who appear in the Image Comics universe alongside Mark Grayson. One of these is Tech Jacket, although the animated series on Prime Video made some changes to his character, similar to what happened with Shrinking Rae.
Zack Thompson from the comic books became a powerful hero thanks to a special Geldarian suit and his own space station, using them to defend Earth. The Invincible animated series features a similar character, but with a twist: she’s now named Zoe Thompson and is voiced by Zoey Deutch. Zoe shares a close bond with her father, Edward (voiced by Bobby Moynihan), who lives on the Geldarian station with her.
Similar to the comic books, Tech Jacket teamed up with Invincible, Omni-Man, and Kid Omni-Man. However, the animated show gave Zoe a much bigger part in the storyline. Her friendship with Allen the Alien made her more likable and connected with viewers, and it could even lead to a future episode or special focused on her character.
I was absolutely blown away when Monster Girl first appeared in Invincible. Seeing her effortlessly take down Rex Splode was shocking, and then she actually went toe-to-toe with Invincible! Even his strongest hit barely fazed her. Since then, she’s consistently shown she’s a real force for good, and I’ve been a fan ever since.
I truly believe Amanda is the glue that holds the New Guardians together. Even though she’s not the biggest person, she’s incredibly mature for her age – honestly, one of the most mature people I know! She’s really the heart of the team, and it’s clear she has a special bond with each of them. It’s especially heartwarming to see her connection with Robot; they really help each other rediscover what it means to be themselves.
Monster Girl’s powers come with a strange cost: each time she uses them, she gets younger. Despite this, she continues to fight alongside the Guardians, confident that her friends will support her and help her deal with the effects.
Debbie Grayson, like many characters in Invincible, appears simple at first, but is actually quite complex. Though she initially comes across as a typical supportive wife and mother, her story reveals much more than that.
Debbie Grayson is a compelling character in Invincible because she realistically shows the deep pain of loss. Many superhero stories avoid exploring such intense emotions, and it’s particularly impactful that this show dedicates time to it with a supporting character. By the season’s end, she’s clearly a much stronger person, having gone through something incredibly difficult.
Debbie’s transformation from a broken and discouraged person to a strong and self-assured one is particularly well-done, adding a lot of heart to the show. Her recent trip into space with her ex-husband to see their injured son has started a new story arc, and it will give Sandra Oh plenty of opportunities to deliver even more impressive performances.
Atom Eve, voiced by Gillian Jacobs, is arguably the most powerful character in the Invincible universe. Though she isn’t incredibly strong physically, her other abilities are almost without limit.
Atom Eve has the incredible ability to manipulate the structure of almost any non-living thing and rapidly heal from almost any wound. She usually does this by projecting pink energy, but her powers are much more versatile. She can transform objects into different materials and even build things from the air around her. Essentially, her only limitation is how creative she is.
Eve is a truly compelling character, especially when you consider her goal of saving the world – and she doesn’t need superpowers to do it. She’s realistic and relatable, a flawed but gifted person simply trying to make the best of her abilities.
