Peacock’s M.I.A. Debuts Strong on Streaming Despite Mixed Reviews

Peacock’s latest crime drama is now available to stream, having launched on May 7th. While reviews have been mixed, the show is proving popular with viewers.

Currently, the show M.I.A. has a 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It started with a score below 60%, which would have meant it was considered a poor show. However, the rating has since improved, now placing it in the “fresh” category. While some critics have been very negative – one even said the show was “dead on arrival” – others believe it’s still worth watching, despite a few flaws in its first season.

M.I.A. Draws Polarizing Reviews From Critics

According to The Hollywood Reporter’s Daniel Fienberg, the series is a fun, but ultimately forgettable, blend of serious, complex dramas and light, escapist entertainment. It doesn’t quite reach the heights of either genre, but it’s still reasonably enjoyable.

Collider’s Jessica Toomer noted that the show shines when it embraces its own unique identity, rather than attempting to imitate Ozark. She described it as a grittier, more unpredictable relative to that series.

According to ScreenAnarchy’s Peter Martin, the show’s constantly shifting sense of reality actually makes it perfect for binge-watching. He describes watching M.I.A. as a thrilling, if unsettling, experience – like being on a seesaw with an alligator, but one you don’t want to end.

M.I.A. Is Peacock’s No.1 Show in the U.S.

The new show M.I.A. is proving popular with online viewers. It quickly became the most-watched show on Peacock in the U.S., debuting at No. 1 (according to FlixPatrol). Globally, it’s performing strongly on Paramount+, currently ranking as the No. 3 show. The fact that all nine episodes were released at once likely contributed to its success, letting people watch the entire season immediately. More viewers will also have a chance to discover the show when the first episode airs on NBC on Thursday, May 14th.

M.I.A. is a thrilling crime series filmed in the Florida Keys. It centers around Etta Tiger Jonze (played by Shannon Gisela, known from Chasers), a woman whose family is secretly involved in drug trafficking for a cartel. After her family is violently killed, Etta embarks on a dangerous quest for revenge, navigating the criminal depths of Miami. Though recently released, the series stands out for its realistic and dark tone, and its distinctive Miami-noir visual style.

Gisela leads the cast of M.I.A., which also features Cary Elwes (known for The Princess Bride), Danay Garcia (Fear the Walking Dead), Brittany Adebumola (The Other Black Girl), Dylan Jackson (City on Fire), Alberto Guerra (Narcos: Mexico), Maurice Compte, Gerardo Celasco (Devil in Ohio), and Marta Milans (Shazam! Fury of the Gods).

M.I.A. is streaming on Peacock, with all nine episodes available now.
