Olivia Colman’s “bittersweet” family drama is available to watch next week in the UK

Next week, Olivia Colman stars in the new family drama, Jimpa, which will be available to watch online in the UK. We’re excited to share a first look – check out this exclusive clip from the movie above!

The new film draws inspiration from director Sophie Hyde’s personal experiences. Olivia Colman stars as Hannah, a filmmaker who journeys to Amsterdam with her non-binary teen, Frances (Aud Mason-Hyde), to rebuild a relationship with her gay father, Jim (John Lithgow), whom they affectionately call “Jimpa”.

Frances’s decision to remain in Amsterdam with Jimpa brings up difficult feelings for Hannah. She has to deal with Frances becoming more independent and also revisit the story of her parents’ quiet divorce from the 1980s, which she’s currently writing a movie about.

In a sneak peek from the film Jimpa, director Hannah is seen talking to the actor playing her father (Cody Fern, known from American Horror Story). She grows frustrated as he asks increasingly personal questions about her life.

You can watch the full movie, Jimpa, when it becomes available on digital platforms from Signature Entertainment starting Monday, May 11th. It’s available to pre-order now on AppleTV so you can watch it right when it’s released.

What to Read Next

I first saw this movie at Sundance last year, and everyone was talking about it! TheWrap called it honest, bittersweet, and really authentic, which I totally agree with. They said it really earned all the emotions it made you feel, and that it just completely breaks your heart open with how real it is – but in a way that leaves you feeling strangely peaceful by the end. It really stuck with me!

According to Screen International, director James Hyde’s latest film is a touching and insightful look at the subtle challenges families face, with strong performances from Olivia Colman and John Lithgow.

According to promotional materials for Jimpa, director Hyde highly commended Olivia Colman’s performance, calling it a dream role for the actress. Hyde also described Colman as “incredible,” noting her warmth and consistent emotional depth.

Hannah is a reserved character, but we needed an actress who could portray a lot of warmth and emotional strength. She needed to convincingly play a mother caught between her child’s beliefs and those of her own parent, and handle that difficult situation with genuine feeling.

“Olivia just surprises you every moment that she’s on screen.”

Jimpa is released on digital platforms on 11 May.

The latest issue of Living Legends, a beautifully illustrated 100-page tribute to Sir David Attenborough, is now available! You can find it at newsstands or purchase it online.
